Grandparents' & Special Friends' Day
Share Rivermont with the special people in our lives
On Wednesday, November 25, 2009, Rivermont will host its
annual Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day. Because this is the day before
Thanksgiving, it is our hope that relatives will be gathering in the Quad
Cities and, therefore, will be able to attend.
This year Grandparents and
Special Friends are welcome to join us beginning at the start of the school
day, 8:30 AM. This will give our special guests more time in the
classrooms. There will be a brief reception at 10:00 AM in Central Hall
to give the students and the teachers time to get ready for the program at
10:30 in the auditorium. Our special day will end at 11:30 A.M. when all
our students will be dismissed and the Thanksgiving Break will begin.
If your child's grandparents are unable to attend, we would encourage you to
invite a special guest (family member, friend, colleague, neighbor, etc.) so
your child will have someone with whom to share the day.
Please send us contact information for your son/daughter's special
guests. We would like to send them a specially prepared invitation.
We are happy to send invitations to all grandparents, whether they can join us
or not. It is always nice to know that someone has been thought of.
Contact Tammi Burrell at burrell@rvmt.org
with the following information so the
invitations can be mailed in time.

Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day is coming soon. On
November 25th, the School will host your child's grandparent or special friend
at a music program and reception. We are looking for volunteers
to provide 1 to 2 dozen cookies for
the reception. Please contact Debra Ryan at 344-0885 if you
can help. This is a chance to show off our school to the important people in our
lives. Your support and assistance is
appreciated.
KUDOS, KUDOS, KUDOS, AND MANY THANKS
for making this year's Fall Book
Fair another success. We had $5,572.36 in sales and collected $1,095 for One
for Books for a grand total of $6,667.36. Out of that, our library and teachers
received over $4,000 in books back to Rivermont through the One for Books
program and donations by our wonderful Rivermont Families. Fantastic job
everyone! You should be very proud, I know I am. Scholastic is making a
donation in Rivermont's name in the amount of $1,095 to Toys for Tots. What
a marvelous way for our school to make a difference not only for our school, but
for those less fortunate.
Thank you to all who volunteered to work the fair. We could not do this
without your assistance. The class that won the Happy Joe's Pizza party is Mrs.
T's First Grade Class. They raised over $170 for One for Books. There was a
tie between Kindergarten and 4th Grade , so Happy Joe's graciously agreed to
provide their classes with an ice cream party. We would like to extend a special
"thank you" to the Happy Joe's Family for their sponsorship of the One for Books
Program and their continued support of Rivermont. It is truly
appreciated.

H1N1 Reminder
Prevent the spread of the virus - Stay home if you are ill.
We continue to be vigilant at School trying to mitigate the spread of H1N1 in our community. We currently have the lowest absence due to flu rate in Scott County. We believe this is due to both healthy habits at school combined with sick students staying home.
We are still waiting for word from the Health department concerning immunization. Parents and guardians will be contacted as soon as we receive word.

Happy Diwali
Festival of Lights
Diwali in India is celebrated with jubilation and
enthusiasm. It is one of the biggest festivals of Hindus and is celebrated for
five continuous days. The third day is the main day of Diwali and is celebrated
as the "Festival of Lights." To
mark this day people light diyas and candles all around their house. During the
evening Lakshmi Puja is performed to seek the divine blessings of the Goddess
of Wealth. People also exchange Diwali gifts with all their dear ones and light
fire crackers in the night to express their happiness .www.diwalifestival.org
Come enjoy this year's celebration of Diwali and watch some of our Rivermont students perform.

John Deere IS Explorers
Interested in pursuing a career in computer technology?
IS Explorers is a co-ed program for young adults, offering high school students in the Quad Cities a real world, business view of computers and technology. The program consists of bi-weekly meetings presented by computer professionals who work in the Information Systems division of John Deere. Students are given presentations, take part in hands-on labs and have educational, computer-oriented competitions.
John Deere IS Explorers is one of about fifty Exploring Posts in the Quad City area, offering local students a view of fields such as law enforcement, law and government, aviation, medical and health careers, computers, and more. Past Explorers have used the program as an opportunity to gain experience towards a particular discipline. This not only helps to determine if a particular career is what a student wants to pursue, but it also offers a head start on others pursuing the same career after high school.

Jump Rope for Heart
Rivermont does it again!
We are very proud to announce that Rivermont students once
again far surpassed the $2500 goal for the American Heart Association fundraising
event of October 2nd by raising $2,900 in donations. We continue to be grateful
to our Rivermont families for their generosity in giving to not only our school
but other worthy causes such as this.
We would like to recognize some individual students and
classes as top fundraisers:
Chirag Gowda (2nd grade) $300
Asha Alla (2nd grade) $250
Genevieve Strasser (2nd grade) $200
Aisling McDowell (3rd grade) $190
Brendan Wheeler (5th grade) $130
Hayes Murphy (2nd grade) $130
Nandini Reddy (1st grade) $100
Windsor Lundy (5th grade) $100
The event was held inside due to the blustery day, but we
all had a wonderful time as Lower
School students jumped
together with many Middle School students for 45 minutes. There was fun music
and drawings for door prizes. The winners of the special raffle for those who
raised $50 or more were: Windsor Lundy (5th grade) for a sports
coaching with Mr. Knupp and Will Sharis (2nd grade), who will attend
a sports event with Ms. Brown. The Second Grade won the classroom competition
by raising $1,165!
We're already looking forward to next year's event and again
give a sincere thanks to our generous students and their friends and families.

Fourth Grade News
Webcast brings authors and readers together
On Monday, November 2, 2009, the 4th grade
joined hundreds of other schools across the nation on the internet for a
webcast. We signed up to view a webcast
sponsored by Scholastic, for a popular book series-The 39 Clues. During this webcast, the students enjoyed seeing their beloved authors tell secrets about
writing and researching for their books. Some of the authors included Rick Riordan,
Gordon Korman, Peter Lerangis, Jude Watson, and Patrick Carman. The highlight
of the webcast was participating in the "Advanced Agent Training" which tested
their skills in the core areas of math, geography, deductive reasoning,
language arts, and problem solving. The
class collected answers th at were submitted simultaneously via internet. Unfortunately, Mrs. Ashby did not have the
fastest fingers in the country and other schools were announced live on the
webcast. However, the students
unscrambled the final code and submitted the response to the website. The class is begging for more webcasts from
Scholastic, so we will keep you posted in the future.
