Dear Rivermont Community,

On Wednesday, November 25, 2009, Rivermont will host its annual Grandparents' and Special Friends' Day. Because this is the day before Thanksgiving, it is our hope that relatives will be gathering in the Quad Cities and, therefore, will be able to attend.  This year Grandparents and Special Friends are welcome to join us beginning at the start of the school day, 8:30 AM.  This will give our special guests more time in the classrooms.  There will be a brief reception at 10:00 AM in Central Hall to give the students and the teachers time to get ready for the program at 10:30 in the auditorium.  Our special day will end at 11:30 A.M. when all our students will be dismissed and the Thanksgiving Break will begin.

If your child's grandparents are unable to attend, we would encourage you to invite a special guest (family member, friend, colleague, neighbor, etc.) so your child will have someone with whom to share the day.

Please send us contact information for your son/daughter's special guests.  We would like to send them a specially prepared invitation.  We are happy to send invitations to all grandparents, whether they can join us or not.  It is always nice to know that someone has been thought of.

Contact Tammi Burrell at burrell@rvmt.org no later than Monday, November 2nd with the following information so the invitations can be mailed in time.

H1N1 Reminder
Prevent the spread of the virus - Stay home if you are ill.

We continue to be vigilant at School trying to mitigate the spread of H1N1 in our community.  We currently have the lowest absence due to flu rate in Scott County.  We believe this is due to both healthy habits at school combined with sick students staying home.

We are still waiting for word from the Health department concerning immunization.  Parents and guardians will be contacted as soon as we receive word.

Third Grade News
Cultural Learning Experience
gabe
Gabe Heaney's grandmother, Pat Stotts, visited the 3rd grade class to teach them about Sweden.  Gabe's mother and grandfather came along as well to assist with the presentation.  Mrs. Stotts told the students about life in Sweden. She brought a map to show the children the area of Sweden where Gabe's family originally came from.  She also shared several books with the students about Swedish history and traditions.  Mrs. Stott's told the legend of Lucia and the Swedish Lucia celebration.  The students enjoyed a delicious Smorgasbord of Swedish meatballs, licorice, cheese, lingonberry jam, cracker bread, and Pepparkaka (ginger cookies).  She read a book about the Dala Horse and then showed the children her Dala Horse.  The Stotts brought in several other Swedish items to share with the children.  The 3rd grade is looking forward to several more cultural learning experiences this year.

Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Stotts and Mrs. Heaney for sharing your heritage with us!

How many colors do pumpkins grow?
JK Wapsi 1
On October 21, 2009, Rivermont's Early School set off for the Pride of the Wapsi Pumpkin Patch.  The sun was shining and we had a great day at the Pumpkin Patch.  Everyone rode in the wagon to the "patch" and each child, teacher, and adult picked a perfect pumpkin to take home.  We learned that there are two blossoms on a pumpkin vine  (called giggle vines), a boy blossom and a girl blossom; each shaped differently.  We learned that worker bees only live 30 days.  We learned that pumpkins come in 7 colors - red, white, blue, green, JK Wapsi 2yellow, orange, and tan.  Everyone had a great day!

Thank you to the many parents who came along for the fun AND thank you to our patient bus driver, Mr. Jim.

Children's Literature Festival
Students experience writing from authors

Twelve students in grades 3, 4, and 5 went with Mrs. Carr and two parents (Mrs. Lucas and Mrs. Fly) to the David R. Collins Literature Festival at the River Center on October 27, 2009.  The students attended sessions with authors, storytellers, and journalists.  Carol Gorman, Cedar Rapids, explained how she got the idea to write the book, Stumptown Kid, a book about a boy who develops a friendship with a baseball player from the Negro leagues back in the 1930's.  She is currently working on a book about an orphan who walked across Iowa to find her sister.  Jill Esbaum of Dixon, Iowa told the students about how she got the ideas for writing several picture books.  She is currently working on a series of books for National Geographic.  She showed the students a page from her latest book and had them help her choose a caption for the picture.  Gary Metivier, award-winning journalist and KWQC TV-6 news anchor, brought his pig that served as his inspiration for his "Willie's Wagon" series of juvenile books.  Several students got to actually touch a real pig!  Mike Mickle, writer of the book Growing Up with FussyPants CrankyShirt, had the students help him write a story.  Other authors and storytellers included Belinda Holbrook, Duffy DeFrance, Eric Tucker, and Chris Turnipseed.  Students were inspired to use everyday experiences along with vivid imaginations to continue to write awesome stories, poems, and other literary works.  Each student also received a free book to take home.

John Deere IS Explorers
Interested in pursuing a career in computer technology?

IS Explorers is a co-ed program for young adults, offering high school students in the Quad Cities a real world, business view of computers and technology.  The program consists of bi-weekly meetings presented by computer professionals who work in the Information Systems division of John Deere.  Students are given presentations, take part in hands-on labs and have educational, computer-oriented competitions.

John Deere IS Explorers is one of about fifty Exploring Posts in the Quad City area, offering local students a view of fields such as law enforcement, law and government, aviation, medical and health careers, computers, and more.  Past Explorers have used the program as an opportunity to gain experience towards a particular discipline.  This not onlyJD logo helps to determine if a particular career is what a student wants to pursue, but it also offers a head start on others pursuing the same career after high school.
