Dear Rivermont Community,
Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 22nd from
3:00-8:00 P.M. and Friday, October
23rd from 8:00 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
A conference registration book -arranged alphabetically- is located at
the reception desk in Becherer Hall. Please stop in anytime before Thursday,
Oct. 22nd and register to visit with the teachers you would like to
see. Then, on the conference days,
teachers will be in their classrooms and will expect you at the times you
listed in the registration book.
Conferences provide important occasions to review student
progress and to set plans for improvement.
Thus, we feel it is essential that in grades 4-12 the student attend all
conferences with the parent. Please take
advantage of this opportunity to partner with the faculty for the benefit of
your child. We look forward to meeting
with you and working together toward excellence.

Student Food Drive
Students helping the Quad Cities
The Student
Food Drive has started! This year, the FoodBank needs
our help more than ever. Last year we raised about 11,000 lbs of food thanks to
your generosity and the hard work of Rivermont students. You can drop off
canned food from now until Wednesday November 4th. The food that is most
needed is canned vegetables and fruits, juice, tuna and canned meats, pork and
beans, stews. The FoodBank will not accept perishable items, pet food, bulk
items, soda, or clothes.
Rivermont students have planned several fundraising activities this year. These include Wild Wednesdays, Lock In (Oct.
9th), CAN Carnival (Oct. 9th) ,CAN Art (November 2-5), and
Mr. Rivermont. We are thinking of adding more activities if we
CAN.
To help with the Food Drive, the faculty and staff have
once again agreed to put on a Variety Show if the students raise at least 2,000 lbs by
October 13. Last year, the faculty and staff put on a wonderful show for
everyone. We are anxious to have it again.
Your help is deeply appreciated.

| Fall BookFair
Destination Reading - One For Books
Help Rivermont make a difference in our community by helping to make
Scholastic's One for Books program a success. Every dollar we raise stays at Rivermont and is used to purchase books for our library. The more we
raise, the more we help a worthwhile national charity like Toys for Tots
make a difference for those less fortunate. Last year we raised over
$1,800. This year we hope to raise even more. Happy Joe's has again sponsored
this program and together we can make a difference. One for Books runs October
1st - 23rd.
Mark your calendars. It's almost here. Rivermont's fall Scholastic Book
Fair is October 20th - 23rd in Becherer Hall. Please volunteer to work the
fair. We are only having one book fair this year, so let's make this the best
fair ever. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Lynn McLaughlin, or
Katie Franks. |
| Early School
Apples, Apples, Apples
Early School students are
finishing a unit about apples and signs of fall. Apples are a part of several
math activities. PreSchool youngsters counted apples and sorted apples based on
color and shape criteria. After identifying favorite apples Junior
Kindergarten students created a graph of the data. They also graphed types of
apples found in our houses. Everyone enjoyed picking apples at Stone's Apple
orchard on Monday but the best part of the unit was eating apples. Tasting
varieties of apples made youngsters pucker but was fun as was cooking apple pies
and apple muffins. Seventh grade reading buddies helped junior k students make
apple burritos. Yum!

NAIS Challenge 20/20
Fifth Grade Selected Again This Year
NAIS Challenge 20/20 is based on Jean Francois Rischard's book High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them. In the book, he articulates 20 global problems that must be resolved in the next 20 years.
The NAIS Challenge 20/20 program brings together schools in the United
States with schools in other countries. Together, they identify local
solutions to a global problem.
Technological advances and increased mobility and networking have led
to an increasingly interdependent world. Schools have the opportunity
to educate students to become leaders in this interconnected world.
NAIS's Challenge 20/20 program provides an opportunity for schools -
public and private, elementary and secondary - to develop globally
based, experiential curricula and to build educational partnerships
with schools around the world. Challenge 20/20 students form authentic
bonds with students from across the globe. They learn first-hand about
cross-cultural communication. Together, the teams tackle a real problem.
Rivermont's Fifth Grade has been selected to participate in this global education opportunity. This is the third time Rivermont has been selected. This year, Leigh Ann Schroeder and her students will work with the American School of Guatemala in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Glenville
Elementary
School in Glenville, WV to tackle the 20/20 Problem - Education for all. Congratulations and Good Luck to our Fifth Graders!

Campus Beautification Day
Keeping a beautiful campus beautiful
Friday, October 9 students and faculty will be working outside. We will be collecting twigs, branches, and apples, weeding flower beds, and planting hundreds of daffodil bulbs that have been donated to the School.
If students can come to school that day dress to work outside with gloves that would be most appreciated! If parents would care to join us we will be happy to put you to work.
