Happy Anniversary!
Dear Rivermont Community,
125 years is no small feat. Our School has educated over 25,000 students in its history who have gone out into their communities prepared and inspired to be full participants. We find our former students and alumni all across the country and in several corners of the world. They are teachers, doctors, lawyers, scientists, artists, writers, corporate heads, volunteers, and parents who carry the lessons learned and the memories shared.
Over the past few days, our current students have experienced what school was like in 1884. Letters and math were done on slates. Recitations and readings were memorized or read in unison. Identification and classification were explored in botany. The sounds of military drill could be heard from the field and the Maypole took center stage on the Mansion Circle. The "good old days" were fun to remember but the Promethean boards, iPods, and email were missed!
Tonight we will gather to raise a toast and celebrate the past 125 years as we also look forward to the next.
With our roots in Saint Katharine's, an Episcopal boarding
school for girls, we grew to become St. Katharine's - St. Marks's, an
exceptional college preparatory school for boys and girls. Today, as Rivermont Collegiate we continue
the tradition of excellence guided by the motto of our founding school, "by
pureness, by knowledge", educating a multi-cultural and non-denominational
student body, preschool though 12th grade, to participate fully in
their local and global communities, striving to develop and express their
intellect, their character, and their creativity.
All hail to the Red & White and Cheers for a job well done and for more to come!

Alumni News
We just heard . . .
Anup Parikh, '09 reports that he is really enjoying
college, but then again, he hasn't had his first midterm yet so it's probably too
early too tell! NJIT did a profile of four
students of the freshman class and did an in-depth article for the school
website. Anup was fortunate to have been one of the students. Check out the article. Congratulations Anup and best wishes for a great freshman year!

Student Food Drive
Students helping the Quad Cities
The Student
Food Drive has started! This year, the FoodBank needs
our help more than ever. Last year we raised about 11,000 lbs of food thanks to
your generosity and the hard work of Rivermont students. You can drop off
canned food from now until Wednesday November 4th. The food that is most
needed is canned vegetables and fruits, juice, tuna and canned meats, pork and
beans, stews. The FoodBank will not accept perishable items, pet food, bulk
items, soda, or clothes.
Rivermont students have planned several fundraising activities this year. These include Wild Wednesdays, Lock In (Oct.
9th), CAN Carnival (Oct. 9th) ,CAN Art (November 2-5), and
Mr. Rivermont. We are thinking of adding more activities if we
CAN.
To help with the Food Drive, the faculty and staff have
once again agreed to put on a Variety Show if the students raise at least 2,000 lbs by
October 13. Last year, the faculty and staff put on a wonderful show for
everyone. We are anxious to have it again.
Your help is deeply appreciated.

NAIS Challenge 20/20
Fifth Grade Selected Again This Year
NAIS Challenge 20/20 is based on Jean Francois Rischard's book High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them. In the book, he articulates 20 global problems that must be resolved in the next 20 years.
The NAIS Challenge 20/20 program brings together schools in the United
States with schools in other countries. Together, they identify local
solutions to a global problem.
Technological advances and increased mobility and networking have led
to an increasingly interdependent world. Schools have the opportunity
to educate students to become leaders in this interconnected world.
NAIS's Challenge 20/20 program provides an opportunity for schools -
public and private, elementary and secondary - to develop globally
based, experiential curricula and to build educational partnerships
with schools around the world. Challenge 20/20 students form authentic
bonds with students from across the globe. They learn first-hand about
cross-cultural communication. Together, the teams tackle a real problem.
Rivermont's Fifth Grade has been selected to participate in this global education opportunity. This is the third time Rivermont has been selected. This year, Leigh Ann Schroeder and her students will work with the American School of Guatemala in Guatemala City, Guatemala, and Glenville
Elementary
School in Glenville, WV to tackle the 20/20 Problem - Education for all. Congratulations and Good Luck to our Fifth Graders!

Students
Participate in Jump Rope for Heart
Rivermont helps fight heart disease
Our students are jumping at the chance to fight
heart disease and stroke, our nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers. On Friday,
October 2nd starti ng at 1:00 p.m. the School will hold its annual Jump Rope For
Heart event. Please help your child remember to turn in pledge forms to their
classroom teachers no later than Monday, October 5th.
Students
will jump rope to raise funds for the American Heart Association, which funds
cardiovascular disease research and public and professional education programs.
Over the coming weeks students will learn and practice their jumping skills and
tricks to prepare for the event.
In
addition to the prizes the AHA provides, this year as a special incentive each form
turned in with funds raised of a minimum of $50 will be entered into a raffle
for that student to have a chance to win one of two prizes: a private hour of
coaching with Mr. Knupp for the winning student and two friends to learn or
improve their skills in one of a selection of sports or a sports outing,
skating, or activity to be determined with two friends and Ms. Brown. Mrs. Warlop will award the top fundraising K-5
class with a PE activity of their choice during their class time. The raffle
will take place at the Jump Rope for Heart event so the envelopes must be turned in on or before that day to be eligible.
Non-winning entries and the envelopes of any amount of pledges raised will be drawn
for other fun prizes. There will be lots of fun door prizes that day as well.
The School's goal for fundraising this year is $2500 - we know we can reach this
goal after the incredible result last year of $2, 259, which was a thousand
dollars more than the goal. The
students' success will determine how long the event will last this year: if we
raise a minimum of $500 the event will last 15 minutes; if we raise $1000, it
will last 30 minutes. If we reach our goal of $2500, we'll stay out and jump
for a total of 45 minutes, which will give everyone time to show off all of our
skills. When you're talking to your children about the event, please emphasize
that the purpose of this event is to learn how exercise benefits the heart and
that volunteering can be fun and beneficial to the entire community. They can
really make a difference to an organization that funds lifesaving research and
educational programs. Please help our students help others.

Tom Dugan - "Simon Wiesenthal: Nazi Hunter" Thanks to a grant from the Rivermont Parents' Council Rivermont students attended a theatre workshop with actor, director, and playwright Tom Dugan. Using excerpts from his one-man show, "Simon Wiesenthal: Nazi Hunter" students learned about the craft of acting while also learning about a sad and dark event in our history. Mr. Dugan captured the attention of our students with his artful portrayal of Simon Wiesenthal.
He will perform his complete production on Sept. 26, 6:30 pm,
