125th Anniversary
Celebrating St.Katharine's - St. Katharine's-St. Mark's - Rivermont

"St. Katharine's Hall was opened
September 24, 1884 - a school founded for the education of Christian women.
... It had long been the plan of Bishop
William Stevens Perry (Episcopal Bishop of Iowa) to open a school for girls in
his diocese of Iowa.
When a sum of money was left to Griswold
College in the will of Miss Sarah Burr
of New York,
the bishop was enabled to carry out the plan. The Trustees of Griswold College
signed the papers by which Cambria
Place, a large residence in eastern Davenport (10th
and Tremont Avenue)
became the property of the college, and thus was established for all time the
girls' school St. Katharine's Hall. The
Iowa Churchman of that time describes the newly acquired building as
follows: 'Cambria Place
is, perhaps, the most palatial of our Iowa
homes. Built by the late Hon. John L. Davies... with every care for beauty,
solidity and perfectness of finish; designed by the celebrated Cochrane, of
Chicago, the architect of the Illinois State Capitol and the building of the
Chicago Board of Trade; situated on a noble bluff overlooking the three cities,
and having a view of nearly a score of miles up and down the Mississippi with
every possible convenience requisite for making this a house beautiful...this new
school...will possess a building especially adapted for educational purposes.'"

In 1909, St. Margaret's Hall was opened. "The school was beginning to be crowded.Although there were accommodations for fifty boarders and forty day students, the
need was felt for more room - especially classrooms and studios. Adjoining the
property was a handsome residence with several acres of land and a dignified
entrance. This was the Renwick
Place, vacant for a number of years, which gave
the only means of expansion possible in the midst of the city. It is built of
stone, the rooms are large and lofty and the woodwork exceptionally fine. There
is a steep bank between the two houses and a connection was made by a covered
way with continuous glass windows on either side, a delightful place especially
in winter when the bright sunlight streams in. Both houses were built about the
same time by old settlers and are solidly constructed, dignified, and handsome,
with a very homelike atmosphere. The three storied stone house contained five
porches, room for an infirmary with its own staircase, a studio, music room,
and dormitory space for thirty more boarders."
In 1973, the School moved
to the Bettendorf Estate at 1821 Sunset Drive, Bettendorf. The five acres and two buildings
- main mansion and carriage house - were purchased from the Marist Society for
$175,000 under a contract at 6% directly from the Fathers. The facility at 10th
and Tremont was sold and became a nursing home.

Celebrate!

Cultural Learning Experience
Appreciating our differences
This year the 3rd grade class will spend time
learning about all of the different cultures represented in their classroom. Mahum Haque's
mother, our first visitor, told the class about Pakistan and her Muslim faith. The students learned about how Pakistan used to be part of India. She was wearing a beautiful traditional outfit
called at Shalwar Kameez. She also
brought some colorful toys from Pakistan. The students each tasted a date and learned
how dates help sustain those who are fasting for Ramadan. Mahum and her family are looking forward to
celebrating Eid ul-Fitar, the end of Ramadan.
They will exchange gifts and enjoy delicious food. The class gives a big thank you to Mahum and
her mother for this presentation.

Students
Participate in Jump Rope for Heart
Rivermont helps fight heart disease
Our students are jumping at the chance to fight
heart disease and stroke, our nation's No. 1 and No. 3 killers. On Friday,
October 2nd starti ng at 1:00 p.m. the School will hold its annual Jump Rope For
Heart event. Please help your child remember to turn pledge forms in to their
classroom teachers no later than Monday, October 5th.
Students
will jump rope to raise funds for the American Heart Association, which funds
cardiovascular disease research and public and professional education programs.
Over the coming weeks students will learn and practice their jumping skills and
tricks to prepare for the event.
In
addition to the prizes the AHA provides, this year as a special incentive each form
turned in with funds raised of a minimum of $50 will be entered into a raffle
for that student to have a chance to win one of two prizes: a private hour of
coaching with Mr. Knupp for the winning student and two friends to learn or
improve their skills in one of a selection of sports or a sports outing,
skating, or activity to be determined with two friends and Ms. Brown. Mrs. Warlop will award the top fundraising K-5
class with a PE activity of their choice during their class time. The raffle
will take place at the Jump Rope for Heart event so the envelopes must be turned in on or before that day to be eligible.
Non-winning entries and the envelopes of any amount of pledges raised will be drawn
for other fun prizes. There will be lots of fun door prizes that day as well.
The School's goal for fundraising this year is $2500 - we know we can reach this
goal after the incredible result last year of $2, 259, which was a thousand
dollars more than the goal. The
students' success will determine how long the event will last this year: if we
raise a minimum of $500 the event will last 15 minutes; if we raise $1000, it
will last 30 minutes. If we reach our goal of $2500, we'll stay out and jump
for a total of 45 minutes, which will give everyone time to show off all of our
skills. When you're talking to your children about the event, please emphasize
that the purpose of this event is to learn how exercise benefits the heart and
that volunteering can be fun and beneficial to the entire community. They can
really make a difference to an organization that funds lifesaving research and
educational programs. Please help our students help others.

King Henry V By William Shakespeare
Directed by James Bohnen
Prince
Hal, now King Henry V, is on the brink of becoming one of Britain's
greatest leaders. But there are obstacles. Two monarchies rampant with
nationalism, a costly war, the lives of the ordinary people who suffer
it. Work your thoughts and grapple your minds to the decks of fleets
majestical, from England to France and back again.
