Dear Rivermont Community,
Though the start of the school year finds many students
reminiscing about lazy summer days of sleeping in and working on their tan, 24
aspiring scientists from throughout Iowa, Illinois, and Missouri
ended the summer of 2009 much more than tan and well-rested! Over 70 high
school students spent their summer working with top scientists at the STARS
(Students and Teachers as Research Scientists) program held at the University of Missouri
- St. Louis. 24
of these students have been acknowledged for their excellence in research. Rivermont is delighted that senior Roshan Babu, son of Dr. Hari and
Shobha Babu of Rock Island,
was among these 24 distinguished students!
STARS pairs students with research mentors from various
universities for six weeks to complete research projects and gain real-world
laboratory experience. Students work with biologists, chemists, computer
scientists, engineers, physicists, and psychologists. Roshan's project, "Pore Forming Activity of
Mutant Forms of Bax: ΔC19Bax
(C62A, C126A)", was reviewed by senior scientists at Pfizer and LMI Aerospace/D3
Technologies and deemed as one of the 24 best, as judged by difficulty and
complexity of research, appropriateness of research methodology, findings,
quality of writing, and overall quality of the research process.

Roshan, who has attended Rivermont since Kindergarten, is
currently researching dental and medical programs at competitive colleges in
virtually every region of the United
States. Congratulations Roshan on this special distinction! We look forward to Roshan's future
contributions to the world of science.

125th Anniversary
Celebrating St.Katharine's - St. Katharine's-St. Mark's - Rivermont
It's not everyday that a school can say it has been educating students for 125 years. Our School has touched the lives of thousands of students and their families. Our graduates and former students represent all walks of life and every field of business and academics. Many have distinguished themselves in their field, in their service, in their communities. It is on the shoulders of those who came before us that we are able to achieve the many accomplishments for which our School has become synonymous.
On September 24th the teachers and students will celebrate our heritage by taking a step back in time. What was school like in the beginning?
Friday, September 25th we will gather as parents, alums, faculty and staff, trustees, and friends to toast the success of the past 125 years and look ahead to the next. Be sure to RSVP. If you need additional invitations, please contact Development Director, Drew Boster boster@rvmt.org (563) 359-1366, ext. 306. Celebrate!

From the Writers' Corner
Some samplings from our Third Graders' river poetry
As I pass the river it always sparkles, except on cloudy
days.
I call this river the Mighty Mississippi.
It starts in Minnesota
and stretches its body to the Atlantic
Ocean.
The shine of the sun makes a sparkle to the beautiful
river
That flows day and night.
Some people think they know what beauty
is,
But they are wrong. Niki Joshi, '19
To me beauty is not sparkles.
Beauty is the river I see every
day.
Birds and animals call the River home sweet
home.
Every day I see it.
You just can't miss it.
For the wide waters will always be near my
home. Aisling McDowell, '19
Sparkling, bubbling, always
moving,
Sometimes overflows,
Great home for fish and all different kinds of
wildlife,
Good for painting pictures
of,
My dad's favorite color,
Its contents are vital for
living,
Dolphins play in it,
Wonderfully clean,
Pale blue and very
peaceful. Gabe Heaney, '19

King Henry V By William Shakespeare
Directed by James Bohnen
Prince
Hal, now King Henry V, is on the brink of becoming one of Britain's
greatest leaders. But there are obstacles. Two monarchies rampant with
nationalism, a costly war, the lives of the ordinary people who suffer
it. Work your thoughts and grapple your minds to the decks of fleets
majestical, from England to France and back again.
