Dear Rivermont Community,
Thank you to everyone for coming out to our BBQ and Back to School Night. In spite of the rain, attendance was strong and the Cafeteria and Central Hall accommodated us just fine. Chef June in the Rivermont kitchen and her helpers did a great job preparing the meal. For the record, we served 178 hot dogs and brats, 202 hamburgers, 40 garden burgers, 20 veggie dogs, 3 sheet cakes, 50 pounds of assorted salads, 20 gallons of lemonade, and 8 jumbo bags of potato chips! The more relaxed pace of the evening provided more opportunities for conversations with less time spent rushing between rooms. And everyone got home at a reasonable hour.
We continue to encourage good hygiene at Rivermont as the first and best defense against the H1N1 flu. Proper hand washing, sneezing into tissues or one's elbow, and the use of hand sanitizer are frequent topics of Morning Meetings and classroom procedures. Both the Scott and Rock Island County Departments of Health are in contact with us, keeping us informed of latest developments and strategies. When the vaccine becomes available Rivermont will be an immunization site. In anticipation of that we are looking for any qualified volunteers who can help with the immunizations. Please contact Sue Johnson, johnson@rvmt.org to volunteer. We will also be hosting a seasonal flu immunization clinic on campus when the time comes.
We are all looking forward to next Friday's O.L.E. Day. Students and teachers in Kindergarten through Grade 12 will travel to Scott County Park for a day of outdoor learning. Specials presentations have been prepared on environmental issues and plans for the park. Students will visit the restoration plot under the direction of the Wapsi
Environmental Center. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather.
Congratulations to Chef June in our kitchen for once again earning a 100% rating from the Scott County Health Department!
Have a great weekend,
Rick St. Laurent Headmaster

Happy Ramadan
Ramadan is the current Muslim holiday which began Saturday
August 22nd 2009 and will be observed for 30 days. According to Islamic tradition, the month of
Ramadan is when Allah revealed the first verses of the Qur'an, the holy book,
to the prophet Muhammad. In honor of this revelation, one thirtieth of the
Qur'an is read each night of Ramadan during the evening prayer. By the end of
the month, the whole Qur'an has been recited.
Although Ramadan is always on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the
date on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, since the Gregorian
calendar is a solar calendar and the Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar. This
difference means Ramadan moves in the Gregorian calendar approximately 11 days
every year. The date of Ramadan may also vary from country to country depending
on whether the moon has been sighted or not.
During Ramadan Muslims fast from sun up to sun down having
no food or drink. This is done to remind
all Muslims of what it feels like to go without, to be hungry and thirsty as so
many people are in the world each day.
This is also a time when Muslims reflect on their lives and strive to
become better people by not just abstaining from eating and drinking, but also
restraining every part of one's physical body.
The mouth, for example, is restrained from idle talk and
gossip, while the ears are restrained from listening to obscenities. In this
way, a Muslim engages his or her entire body in the physical observance of the
Ramadan fast.
In addition to the fast, Ramadan is also a time to
re-evaluate one's convictions and deeds. It is a time to mend troubled
relationships, give to charity, find forgiveness for others, and refocus on
worshipping Allah (God).Muslims are encouraged not to engage in gossip, or
speaking ill of others. Ramadan is the time to help and assist the needy and it
is an important time for self reflection.
Ramadan is all about purifying the soul through prayer and
self-sacrifice.
Ramadan is a time Muslims ask themselves: "When I leave this world will I have good answers to all
God's Questions?
Special thanks to Krystel Ersan, mother of Ela (K) and Evan (2) for sharing her family's Ramadan traditions at our Assembly on Tuesday.

Going Green
Rivermont reduces paper
This year Rivermont will be making greater use of our website and email delivery and less use of paper for newsletter and flyers. HEADlines will take on a new format in the body of emails rather than as an attachment. Links will also be included in the body of HEADlines to take readers to forms, flyers, and online resources. This alone will have a significant impact on our paper consumption and disposal. Good for the School and good for the planet!
Be sure that we have your current email address so you do not miss out on important information. Updates can be sent to burrell@rvmt.org or marietta@rvmt.org
