BML Invention Report Process supported in Iproperty
In last months newsletter we introduced you to the book Iproperty (find on my blogs booklist). This book contains a wealth of information about the patent process and its proper management. It also sheds light on a great many myths and poor patent practices within companies which result in their paying more money for weaker patents which don't fit with the companies business goals.
For example, many companies consider patents the exclusive domain of the patent department and/or outside attorneys. They become involved as little as possible and engage in problematic practices such as asking attorneys to draft patent applications from the photocopied contents of inventors notebooks. Along with being extremely inefficient and costly, this practice disconnects the attorneys from those who know the most about the invention, the inventors themselves. Thus key features which should be patented are often ignored and minor points may be covered in far greater detail than is warranted.
To create what Iproperty calls a "Formal Document", and we refer to as an Invention Report. Iproperty recommends "a structured interview (sometimes called an oral invention disclosure") combined with documentation by a technical writer". This process is much less costly and more effective than tossing the inventors notebook over the wall to the patent department. The preparation of Invention Reports is one of the many services provided by BML. Before you waste time and reduce the quality of resulting patents by outsourcing the entire patent process to the patent department or outside counsel, call us. We can save you time, money and improve the quality of the resulting patents. Look at this link to our AlaCarte Patents.com website for more details

ITTr Meets with Greater Rochester Enterprise
Greater Rochester Enterprise (GRE) is "a regional economic development organization, [which] supports business attraction and expansion, as well as entrepreneurship and innovation throughout the Greater Rochester, NY region."
Recently ITTr met with GRE to make them aware of the resouces ITTr brings to the community in the form of patents we broker for clients from all over the country. With GRE's connections to businesses that want to locate or grow in Rochester, the addition of intellectual property assets can spur that growth by providing a source of new products for new, growing or re-locating companies.
We shared with GRE a patent on Sole Roll the basketball shoe cleaner (see the December issue of this newsletter). By pure chance one GRE official is a basketball coach. We had brought along a Sole Roller to use as a prop. Instead we gave it to the coach to try out.

Trade Show Followup Pilot Project Upcoming
The fourth Penguin product arose out of RPG President Ruth Balkin's love of trade shows. Over the many years she attended the shows, she devised methods for keeping track of the contacts she made, following up with them and even sending presents and thank you's.
Many people come back from a trade show with a pile of business cards and good intentions on following up which get lost in the press of daily business activities.
Penguin has taken Ruth's tried and true methods (which she even built a presentation and course around) and productized them.
With the help of software designer Chuck Cordaro of Computer Sojourns, Penguin has constructed speciality database software which:
- Collects information from trade show contacts (from business cards , badges, lead forms etc) and organizes them into a database.
- This database is then linked to a customer authorized script which telephone callers use to followup with the prospects and obtain valuable information for our clients.
- TSF is equally useful to all users of Trade Shows, including: attendees, vendors, tradeshow organizers and trade show support companies.
TSF has been shown to trade show experts and their comments have been used to improve the software. A pilot project will help the Rochester Professional Consultants Network (RPCN) follow-up on new attendees at meetings.
