Update: BCA Annual Meeting

Our 2011 annual meeting covered a lot of ground.

BCA's assembled members applauded Sing Hanson's annual report and Rosemary Barnett's treasurer's report (click the links to read their reports) and then turned their attention to the rest of the agenda.

Jean Hammond was honored for her long and tireless service to BCA both as one of our original studio tenants and for her years as our Treasurer.

Changes to the BCA board were voted unanimously: New board member Doris Smith was warmly welcomed; and our pro tem officers (Recording Secretary Liz Rodriquez and Treasurer Rosemary Barnett) are now official members of the board.

Volunteer of the year awards were presented to Doris  Webber for her continued support of BCA and to Charlotte Christen and Linda Christen for sustaining the Jerry Christen scholarship, for bringing the Vagina Monologues to Bedford this year, and for their leadership in creating and staffing Third Friday Crafternoons.

And finally, it was a terrific party, with each table decorated with glorious sea shells (curated by our own conchologist, Maureen Oates), plus Chuck Frates (and the CoA Chuckettes!) tapping up a storm. Click here to see a clip from their performance.

Thanks to the annual meeting planning committee (Suzi Natti, Joanna Nickerson, and Kati Oates) and everyone who pitched in and helped in pulling it all together!

Wednesday Evening Art Flicks

Typeface

7:30 pm on Wednesday, June 15

Charting the intersection of rural America and contemporary graphic design, Typeface features great characters, both human and wooden. It's the story of a rural Midwestern museum and print shop in Two Rivers Wisconsin, where international artists and retired craftsmen meet and together navigate the convergence of modern design and traditional technique in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. Click here to learn more about the film.

You're invited to join BCA members and friends in a comfortable home cinema here in Bedford, to enjoy drinks, munchies and the film. We'll begin promptly so you'll be home early.

Tickets are $10 each, paid at the door. Please contact Sing Hanson to arrange your admission to make your reservation early because space is limited.

Monthly BCA activities for May

The BCA Photo Group: A nontrivial self-help group for intermediate & advanced photographers, the Photo Group will meet at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, June 7, in the BCA space on the ground floor of Old Town Hall in Bedford.

Studio Artists' Breakfast: On hiatus in June; the next breakfast will take place on Tuesday, July 6.

Third Friday Crafternoons:
It's almost Father's Day, and you're invited to make cards and gifts for all the important Dad-people in your life.  We will have everything you need to make picture frames and key chains and anything else your imagination can create.  Bring your favorite pictures to put in your picture frames for a completed gift.

Designed for crafty kids and their adults, Third Friday meets in the Bedford Center for the Arts space on the ground floor at Old Town Hall, 16 South Road in Bedford. Prior registration isn't required and there is no fee.  Come as you are and drop in for the fun and crafts on June 17 from 3 to 6 pm.

Play-Reading Group: Because we read Life with Father in its original prose format last month, we've reserved the play for our June reading.

We're scheduled to gather in the BCA space on the ground floor of Old Town Hall at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, June 14, unless we hear that most people would prefer to meet that evening at 7:30.

Group leader Lois Pulliam, and each person in sequence, reads the next speech going around the room thus assuring everyone an equal chance at the good parts as well as the not-so-wonderful ones -- and occasionally matching unlikely voices and characters! Please click here to let us know that you'd like to participate!

BCA Members ~ Out & About

BCA members Jean and Ralph Hammond will be found 'sweeping' the Bedford PMC Kids' Ride on Saturday, June 11. The ride involves hundreds of local kids to benefit the Dana Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. Jean and Ralph will also train and ride in the adult Pan Mass Challenge on August 6 and 7.

There's been a lot going on for Bedford composer Halsey Burgund.  He recently performed his  Ocean Voices in Washington, D.C., as a part of Céline Cousteau's 'Ocean Inspiration' initiative as well as during the opening night of the 2011 Blue Vision Summit. There's an Ocean Voices Android app so you can add your voice to the mix. And, the work is now part of Patagonia Music's New Music stream. His installation/exhibit Voices Without Faces, Voices Without Races at Boston's Museum of Science closes on June 5 -- check out a Friends of the Library museum pass and head into town!

Jean Hammond, Susan Keroes, Carol Rissman and Astrid Reischutz are BCA members who also serve on the Bedford Library's Art Steering Committee. In that role, they've mounted Curators Show, 2011, an overview of their personal work.

Abiquiu, a digital fine-art print created by Sing Hanson, is included in the Cambridge Art Association's  2011 North East Prize Show, curated by Theodore Stebbins, Curator of American Art at Harvard's Fogg Museum. In the Kathryn Schultz Gallery, 25R Lowell St., Cambridge, the show will be until June 16. Click for directions and hours.
