COMMUNITY EVENTS - The Art of the Garden
Bedford's 58th Annual First Parish Plant & Craft Fair on May 14 features a wide selection of heritage perennials from members' gardens, specialty annuals, nursery-grown native plants plus hearty locally-grown annuals, perennials, veggie 6-paks, tomato plants, herbs for cooking or to enhance your garden, and shrubs. There will be more than 50 crafters and community organizations on the Common; a traditional cook-out lunch; an outstanding bake sale; and fun for the family including music by the Yankee Doodle Dixieland Band and a petting zoo featuring Bedford 4-H kids and their animals to round out the fun. Carol's Collectibles: Each year Helen Horigan and Judith Lennett invite Carol Yee to bring her collection of unusual plants from her nursery in Swanville, Maine, to their home at 29 Conway Street in Roslindale. This year's sale, the 11th, will take place on May 28.
Lilac Sunday will take place at Arnold Arboretum on May 8. A new exhibit in the Hunnewell Building's Lecture Hall will feature The New Botanicals, Lilacs: Images by Vinette Varvaro through June 5. There will be a reception with the artist from 6 until 8 pm on Wednesday, May 4 and Ms. Varvaro will speak about her work at 6:30 on Wednesday, May 18. Varvaro will also be present in the Lecture Hall on Lilac Sunday.

Emerson Umbrella presents a series of practical workshops for professional success in the visual arts, each led by an experienced professional, here to share their knowledge and expertise.
Designed to promote artistic and professional growth and to deliver skill-building opportunities, the workshops include:
- Publicity - How to promote yourself and your work, presented by Aliza Shapiro on May 9, 6 to 9 pm
- Social media for the arts - How to promote yourself virtually free, presented by Adaleta Maslo-Krkovic on May 16, 6 to 8 pm
- Finding the right gallery, presented by Faith Johnson on May 23 from 6 to 9 pm
- Becoming an on-line seller, presented by Adaleta Maslo-Krkovic on May 30 from 6 to 9 pm
- Taxes for artists, presented by a specialist (to be announced later) on June 7 from 6 to 9 pm

The opening reception for the Umbrella's second annual outdoor sculpture exhibit, BIG ART 2, and the BIG ART 2 Gallery Show will take place from 6 to 9 pm on Thursday, May 12. BIG ART 2 will be on display on the grounds of the Emerson Umbrella through November 1.

AT THE CONCORD ART ASSOCIATION (CAA)
Demo Days take place on Wednesday mornings from 10:30 to 12:30 (doors open at 10 am). May 11: Cathy Carnett, Watermedia Collage; May 25: Jan Cadman Powell, Knitting and Fiber in Art.
Wednesday evenings feature a drop-in life drawing class from 7 to 9 pm; the class is open to all for a small per-session fee.

MUSIC
The Jay Geils All-Star Jazz & Blues Revue will appear in Emerson Umbrella's auditorium at 8 pm on Saturday, May 21. The concert will feature rock legend Jay Geils from the J. Geils Band and Bluestime; award-winning jazz guitarist Gerry Beaudoin; two-time Grammy Award-winning saxophonist Fred Lipsius from Blood, Sweat and Tears; and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Doug Bell from the Bellvue Cadillacs. The band is rounded out by Gerard Beaudoin on vibes, Les Harris Jr. on drums, and Jesse Williams on bass. The Handel and Haydn Society presents The Bach Experience on May 12 and 15 in Memorial Church at Harvard University. On May 18, New England Conservatory's Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (YPO) under the direction of Benjamin Zander will play in the pit of Boston's Opera House for Boston Ballet's Next Generations in a cross-disciplinary partnering opportunity that comes rarely to adult musicians and perhaps never to teens. That same night, NEC's Youth Symphony will perform in Jordan Hall, where the YPO will also appear on June 3. Both concerts are sendoffs for tours of European music capitals. Click to learn more.
