Amahl and the Night Visitors

Gian Carlo Menotti's beloved holiday opera Amahl and the Night Visitors will be performed in the sanctuary at First Parish on the Common, 75 The Great Road in Bedford on Friday, January 8, at 7 pm and on Saturday, January 9, at 4 and 7 pm.

This fully staged production features professional singers and members of the First Parish choir, along with members of Creationdance, directed by Helena Froehlich. 

Suggested donation: $20 (adults); $10 (seniors/students). Ages 12 and under accompanied by an adult are invited to attend without charge. Proceeds will support the work of First Parish in Bedford. Tickets are available in the church office during regular business hours.

The Friends of the Bedford Free Public Library
  • This year's Sunday afternoon lecture series, presented  again by Dr. Daniel Breen, will focus on the Civil War. The programs will begin on Sunday, January 10, at 2 pm in the meeting room at the library and continue through the end of February (specific dates: January 17 and 31, and February 7, 21 and 28). There is no need to pre-register.
  • The Thursday film series continues through January with Julie & Julia (January 7); Adam (January 14); Angels and Demons (January 21); and Bright Star (January 28).

Author Luncheon Featuring Hank Phillippi Ryan

Channel 7's investigative reporter Hank Phillippi Ryan is also an award-winning mystery writer who chronicles the adventures of Charlotte McNally.

Phillippi Ryan will speak about her books during an author luncheon at 1 pm on Sunday, January 24, at the Wyndham Andover Hotel, 123 Old River Road, Andover (near the intersection of Rtes 93 and 495).

Tickets are $25 each and proceeds will benefit Patient Paths  where BCA member Brian Hodder serves as a board member. To reserve your tickets, e-mail Brian or call 781-275-5599.

50 Under 50

Lowell's Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios honors the old year and celebrates the new with 50 under 50 -- an exhibit of works priced under $50 by the gallery's 50 members. The exhibit features an opportunity to view (or purchase) oils, photographs, watercolors, sculpture, fiber art, acrylics, glass, jewelry, mixed media from many creative talents.

Visit 50 under 50 at the Loading Dock Gallery at Western Avenue Studios, 122 Western Avenue, Lowell (2nd floor in the A-Mill building) from January 6 to 31. Visit the gallery between 11 am and 4:30 pm, Wednesday through Sunday, or come to the open reception on Friday January 8 from 7 to 9 pm. Creativity in Your Garden

Local author Ashley Rooney will speak on adding ornamentation to your garden at the Bedford Garden Club's monthly  meeting on Tuesday, January 12, at 9:30 am at the Bedford Library.

The Art of Parenting
  • Bedford Youth and Family Services and the Special Education Parents' Advisory Council will present a free program featuring Dr. Ross Greene, author of Lost at School. Dr. Greene's talk, Why our Children with Behavioral Challenges are Falling Through the Cracks and How We Can Help Them - The Explosive Child, will take place in the Town Hall auditorium (Mudge Way) on January 26 at 7 p.m.  For additional information: 781-275-7727.
  • Are you wondering which local preschool might be the perfect fit for your child?  Bedford Family Connection's Preschool Open House at Bedford's Town Center will feature representatives from area schools who will distribute information about their programs and answer any questions you might have. Coffee and tea will be served.  Monday, January 25 from 7 to 9 pm in the Shawsheen Room at Town Center, 12 Mudge Way.   • SteveSongs' Pajama Party on Martin Luther King Day returns for the 9th year to benefit the Temple Emunah Pre-School. Come clad in your most stylin' jammies and dancing slippers, ready to move and groove to the family-friendly music of acclaimed SteveSongs and his Sensational Sillies singers. The shows will take place at 10 am and 1 pm on Monday, January 18 at the Temple Emunah social hall, 9 Piper Road, Lexington. Tickets are $12 (pre-sale) or $14 (at the door) and are available at Michelson's Shoes in Lexington Center or on line at www.stevesongs.com. Yummy breakfast treats will be available throughout the concert.
  • Winter storytimes at the Bedford Library begin on January 19. Register in the Children's Room or by phone (781-275-9440).
  • Join the Saturday morning fun at Concord Youth Theatre's new black box theatre, 50 Beharrel Street in West Concord. Performances begin at 10:30 on most Saturday mornings (check the schedule). Tickets are $5. Shows are appropriate for ages 3 and up. 
  • The Concord Museum is free on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 4 pm; January 10, 17 and 24.
