Did You Know...

The term Sultanabad has come to distinguish the oldest and highest quality Mahal rugs produced starting in the late 19th century. Sultanabad rugs, like the antique to the top left in our quick links, have classical Persian floral motifs with a medallion or overall designs of vinescrolls and palmettes. Although they were made in the same area as the earliest Farahans/Sarouks, Sultanabads more closely resemble the graphic character of Heriz/Serapi rugs, but with more curvilinear linework. Sultanabad rugs also often have a rich, warm palette like Farahans/Sarouks. During the late 19th century, the firm of Hotz & Son and Ziegler & Co. established looms in Sultanabad to produce rugs for western demands.
