Oushak 101
Palm Beach Oushak | Oushak rugs originated in the small town of Oushak, just south of Istanbul, Turkey. Prior to this, Oushak carpets were woven by nomads as necessities of life. They tend to be more coarsely woven than Persian rugs, and are always woven with a symmetric Turkish knot. The designs on Oushak rugs are typically based on geometric motifs. This is due largely to the fact that since most Turks are Muslims, they observe the prohibition against the depiction of people and animals. Today reproduction Oushaks are made in numerous rug weaving countries. Traditional hand-knotting techniques are still utilized but now modern color palettes are applied to the designs.
