Ag-Link Direct Applications
Available Jan. 4, 2010

2010 Applications Due March 12

The Ohio Treasurer of State has announced Agriculture Linked Deposit Applications will be available January 4, 2010. This is an annual program that provides an interest rate reduction on operating loans and lines of credit to Ohio's farming community and can help you finance input costs for supplies such as feed, seed, fertilizer and fuel.  The Ohio Treasury places deposits with Ohio banks at below market rates when the bank agrees to reduce the interest rate on the farmer's loan. By law, $125 million is allocated for Ag-Link annually.

In order to qualify for the Agricultural Linked Deposit program, a farmer must meet the following guidelines:
  • The farm must be headquartered in Ohio;
  • Must maintain 51% of all land and/or operating facilities in Ohio;
  • Must be organized for profit;
  • Must complete the required application;
  • Must apply through an eligible lender by the specified deadline.

Late Harvest Impacts Corn Quality
  Courtesy Croplan Answer Plot Advisor, November 2009

Articles about disease, mold and ear rot don't find their way to publication in an ideal harvest season, but 2009 has been far from ideal. With some areas seeing above average precipitation and record low-temperature averages in October, high moisture levels have been the big story. Most soybean acres have been harvested, but there's still corn in fields throughout the Northern and Midwestern United States.

The high moisture conditions have led to increased damage levels in harvested grain this fall, which makes grain grading a challenge, especially in the rush to harvest. Researchers from Iowa State University Extension issued a release* earlier this month reporting that elevator operators have seen cases where visible mold damage was 5 percent and higher. In an average year, mold damage levels are typically less than 2 percent in freshly harvested corn. Damaged corn reduces the storability and shelf life of the grain, says Winfield Solutions Regional Product Manager Eric Bartels.

Home for the Holidays
Outdoor Tips to Make Your Holiday Season Brighter

The weather outside might be frightful, but with Southwest Landmark, you can make your holiday season more delightful by purchasing products to melt the ice and to keep the snow
at bay at our Farm Stores. Each year, thousands of our           customers rely on us for all of their winter needs. We've provided some helpful tips to ensure that your home is in great shape not only for the holidays, but for winter too.

Snow and Ice Removal Tips
  • Check the weather. If you know a snowstorm is coming, you can be better prepared. Have your snow removal tools like shovels, melting agents and snow blower in a convenient area for immediate use. Get to the store before the storm. Check out www.weather.com for the latest conditions in your area.
  • Dress appropriately. When you are going to be outside, you must dress for the conditions. Wear multiple layers, keep your head covered and wear durable footwear that will keep you dry.
  • Don't over work yourself. Snow can fall fast. Focus on removing snow from the important areas of your house like the main entrance and the driveway. If shoveling, push the snow and only remove it in sections. If you over work yourself in severe temperatures, you put yourself at risk for a heart attack or a stroke.
  • Watch out for ice. Ice can hide under layers of snow. Be sure to spread melting agents in high-traffic areas around your home including porches and sidewalks. Also, when driving, remember black ice can hide in spots on roads and can cause car accidents.
