Why She Rides
By Sarah Paulson
 | Heather, on left, and friends |
As a local high school math teacher and family friend, Heather Lorge participates in Cycle the WAVE because "it is a fun time to get together with girlfriends and do something active that I know is benefitting others." Not being an intense cyclist, participating in the 25 mile Girly Girl ride was an accomplishment for Heather.
Heather shared a bit of advice from her experience for those wanting to take on the challenge of the 25 mile ride, "ride with some friends so you have the support of others if you need help" but then again, there is a "crew that drives around and fixes flats and helps with other mechanical needs." Heather learned this firsthand when she enlisted the "guys on bikes" crew to help with her brake problem. Like many of the other participants, Heather emphasizes the sense of community within the event, the excitement and positivity from the other riders and spectators as well as the volunteers and everyone else coming together and getting involved.
Heather has had the opportunity to participate in other Eastside Domestic Violence Program events so so she understands what (she is) riding for and what (her) donation supports. She is appreciative for the amazing women putting on the event!
When asked what she took away from riding in Cycle the WAVE and if any of it has impacted her life, Heather replied, "I take the knowledge that there is the potential of violence in ANY neighborhood. It is easy to let yourself believe that it just happens in less fortunate areas, but there are women who could be acquaintenances or even friends that may be experiencing domestic violence on some level. Promoting awareness is always a good thing." Heather is right; with "domestic violence being experienced by 1 in 4 women in their lifetimes and encompassing all socio-economic backgrounds, education levels, races, religions and ages" there is the likelihood that you may know someone.
