Inspiration

Who could have guessed that the beautiful weather we had been enjoying would take a turn on September 18th. When I awoke that morning to pounding rain, my first thought was to stay in bed. But if I did that I would not only be letting my riding partner and team down, but also myself. I had set a goal to make this ride and I was determined to finish what I had started.

To say the day was amazingly fun would be an understatement. Adding to the experience was the palpable energy from the many women who came together to make a difference for those facing difficulties. The reasons to ride are as varied as each woman who got on a bike that morning. Whatever was our motivation, whatever drove us to be part of this event, the end would be the same for all of us...a united front against domestic violence.

Cycle the WAVE was my carrot... I needed the challenge to make sure I would stick to my goal of getting back into cycling. I figured once I had completed the ride my goal was accomplished...time to move on. So much for that idea!

Beyond the rediscovery of how much I love cycling, I found inspiration from this event that moved me in a way I wasn't expecting. Riding with my friend Jaime, laughing, singing, and cheering each other was a bonding experience further strengthening our friendship; she inspires me. The many volunteers who stood in the rain to encourage riders; they inspire me. The young girls who rode joining the adult women; they inspire me. The firefighters who handed out hot tamales to encourage riders; they inspire me. The organizers who had the vision to create and then host this event; they inspire me. And the many victims of domestic violence who strive daily to find safe harbor for themselves and their children; they inspire me.

I believe it's important to share my experience. My finish line "medal" which is pinned to the front of my vest, and my ride number pinned to the back raises questions with people I encounter. I explain their meaning and how they are a reminder of the individuals needing safe and healthy places to live and work.

Before I began the ride, I wasn't sure I would participate again next year. The moment I crossed the finish line I knew I was hooked. I'm already registered and can't wait to again join the amazing women who are willing to help stop the cycle of violence.
