 If I had known when I started working at REI that I would be training to ride in an organized bike ride... on purpose... I would have laughed. I'm so excited and honored to be riding in Cycle the WAVE; it's hard to express how I got to this place at this time in my life.
I was an avid cyclist for years. I went everywhere on my bike, it was just part of my lifestyle. Somewhere along my journey through graduate school, moving across country - twice, my riding miles began to dwindle. Sadly, my bike sat idle for years. One day I took my old bike to work for our shop techs to check out. I had no idea how bad of shape it was in until they said it would be cheaper to just purchase a new bike.
I really wanted to start riding again... I missed it, and I had heard cycling was good for people with bad knees. I first learned about Cycle the WAVE last year at the Southcenter REI Cyclefest Event. I thought about riding, but I still needed to replace my bike, so it just wasn't meant to be for 2010. When I saw Cycle the WAVE again this year at Cyclefest, I decided then to make the commitment to ride.

Pedal Partners Sell Lemonade for Cycle the WAVE
 Talia Berkman and Mitra Shafii decided they wanted to make a difference to the children and families affected by domestic violence. These young girls brainstormed and came up with an old fashioned lemonade stand and raised $169 surpassing their goal of $100! Thirsty neighbors were offered refreshing lemonade, homemade brownies and cookies as the girls talked about Cycle the WAVE. Talia and Mitra with their moms are riding the 12-mile Little Sister.
Due to the generosity of so many our Pedal Partner Giving donations have been growing!
You can help by donating today. Help us reach our fundraising goal of $40,000, any amount is welcome and all proceeds go directly to domestic violence organizations. |
