Meet the Riders:

Cycle the WAVE Burly Girl - 62!

Maren Bisson

Ms. August 2011      I cycling.  The Burly Girl ride provided an intensive work out that fit right in to my triathlon training plan, but was a workout that was so much fun it left me wishing all my long rides were like this. The course was hilly and scenic and so well supported I even passed a rest stop. I've never been on my bike with a colorful carnation in my helmet, but found it whimsical and sweet. I would love to see more women out on the course because the volunteers really inspire you and cheer you on. It's the perfect opportunity for people to challenge themselves knowing there is someone around every corner there to assist or push you.

I have had experience in racing marathons and triathlons, but have never felt the camaraderie that I felt from this well organized, charitable event.  Ride fees can become expensive and giving to charity can sometimes go by the way side with rising costs, but with Cycle the WAVE it was such a good feeling to be able to participate and feel good about my entry fees helping others in need.

It's much easier to don those attractive spandex bike shorts on a rainy morning when you know you will be greeted with the most caring, energetic women in the NW who all share a common goal with you. This was my impression of the Cycle the WAVE Burly Girl ride.

Get out there everyone! Dare to dream big! We never know what we are capable of until we try.

Cycle the WAVE Broadens its Mission
Cycle the WAVE is excited to broaden its mission to "inspire fitness, increase awareness and instill hope" across Washington State. This year, net proceeds will support the services that Eastside Domestic Violence Program, DAWN and New Beginnings provide to affect change for domestic violence in our communities.
The services of these agencies are far reaching and often extend beyond their boundaries into neighboring areas. Generally, EDVP serves East and North King County, DAWN, Seattle and South King County and New Beginnings, Seattle and North King County.
In 2010, collectively these 3 agencies served more than 25,000 callers alone on their 24-hour crisis lines. They are making a difference and so are you----ONE PEDAL AT A TIME!

Pedal Partner Giving Program

Pedal Partner Giving Program has made some exciting changes for this year's event! Fundraising is not mandatory to participate in Cycle the WAVE but for those participants who choose to make a difference, we'd like to say a big "thank you!"

We know that for many of you, a reward is not necessary for generating funds but we want our riders to know just how thankful we are for their efforts. In our appreciation, the three individuals who raise the most could win a Greg LeMond Bicycle or two nights at Cascade Valley Inn in Cashmere, or a 2012 Cycle the WAVE jersey and arm warmers. Learn how to get started today!

Cycle the WAVE Needs You!
Participants of Cycle the WAVE often go out of their way to mention and thank us for our great volunteers! If you perhaps are not a cyclist but want to help, we will find a way to use your skills. It is easy to sign up now that we have placed our volunteer registration online for your convenience. Please take a look at the jobs and shifts open and sign up today!  Email volunteer@cyclethewave.org if you have any questions!

Ride SMART Tips

STAY ALERT - watch for cars, other riders and hazards - momentary inattention is the number one cause of accidents.

MOVE OFF THE ROAD WHEN STOPPING - pull completely off the road to let cars and riders pass; do not block driveways or instersections.

ACT LIKE A CAR - OBEY ALL TRAFFIC LAWS - stop at signs, and use hand signals.

RETAIN SPACE BETWEEN YOURSELF AND OTHERS - leave enough room to dodge obstacles.

TELL OTHERS WHEN PASSING AND PASS ON LEFT
