"It' a Good Thing..."
by Nicole Tanner

Peer pressure can be a good thing...right?
Like when I was talking to a friend TWO days before Cycle the WAVE last year.  I didn't even know the event was around the corner.  I wasn't trained.  It was off my radar.
Several years ago I ruptured a disc in my neck, which has made biking difficult.   I bought an upright bike, so my left arm wouldn't go numb as often.  So there was a fear factor to hurdle over.  The most I've ever biked is 10 miles max.
But my persuasive friend on the Cycle the WAVE committee said..."You can do it!  It won't be hard!  The teens from the Issaquah High School swim team are even doing it!  The Girly Girl is 'only' 25 miles.  Hills?  What hills?"   (I do have a bone to pick with her about the 'no hills'...being from Texas, anything above grade flat is a hill!  I've forgiven her, as she loaned me a cute biking shirt for the day.)
I passed on the pressure and called another friend who had been training for the Danskin Triathlon.  She immediately said if I would do it, she would.  Gulp...and there we went.
What a fabulous day!  My amazed teenage son and hubby took me to the start.  The event was fantastically organized.  The volunteers were encouraging.  Who can resist the generous free goodies that were showered on us?!   The day was lovely; a cool cloudy start.  I've never tasted a better peanut butter and jelly sandwich than at the half way point!.  And I would be remiss if I didn't mention the hunky firefighters of Issaquah tossing us Hot Tamales!
It wasn't a piece of cake.  but it made the accomplishment that much sweeter.  Every time it got tough, I'd think of a woman being battered, her pain much worse than my arm numbness and I was able to pedal with perseverance.  I was inspired all along the way by gals that took on the challenge with greater handicaps than mine.  It ended up being one of last year's highlights!
Well, the peer pressure is starting already from by buds.  They want to do the Middle Sister this year.  It's a good thing, right?
Exciting Events in July

This month has been full of activity!
On July 15th we hosted our 2nd Annual Kick-Off Party at Maggiano's Little Italy in Bellevue.  We see our Kick-Off Party as a great way to kick-start fundraising and generate excitement for Cycle the WAVE and this year was no exception!  With more than 250 attendees, we held a silent auction raising over $6000, showcased our fabulous sponsors and introduced our 2010 ride jersey!  In addition to fun, food and good friends, we were so proud to introduce Bridget to the crowd.  Bridget is an honored member of our Cycle the WAVE team this year!  She has bravely come forward to tell her story and put a much needed face to domestic violence in our communities.  There wasn't a dry eye in the house as we listened to her story and all of us ladies at Cycle the WAVE are honored to have her join us this year!  A special thanks goes out to our emcee for the evening, Ron Upshaw of the Ron & Don Show, Maggiano's Little Italy for hosting us, and of course, all of you who attended!

Additionally, the Cycle the WAVE team made their television debut this week on KING 5's new daytime talk show -- New Day Northwest with Margaret Larson!  Ride Director, Sharon Anderson and Bridget were on the show sharing with all of Puget Sound about the fun things riders can expect during the 3rd annual Cycle the WAVE.    Bridget was there to share her story and to receive a very special gift.  Unbeknownst to her, Cycle the WAVE worked with Veloce Velo in Issaquah to get a bike, helmet and everything she needs to participate on September 19th!  The look on her face when the bike was rolled out was priceless and we couldn't be more thrilled to give back to this special lady!  We can't wait to see her out on the course in her 2010 Cycle the WAVE jersey and bright blue Scott bike from Veloce Velo!  Watch the segment here:

Exercise of the Month
Exercise - Booty BlasterBooty Blaster

Summer is finally here!  Hopefully you're taking full advantage of our perfect riding weather and logging loads of miles on your bike.  While gym workouts may seem sacrilege, don't neglect your supplemental strength training exercises.  Burly Girls know that strong riding requires work on and off the bike.
This month's exercise integrates all muscles of the body - legs, core, and upper body - with focus on the glutes.  Due to prolonged time in the saddle, glutes can become lengthened causing weakness and imbalance in the hip/pelvic/lumbar area.  The 1 Leg Vertical Thrust (not-so-fun technical exercise name) simulates the necessity to stabilize the core and hips while moving the legs.

Try it:
Place hands directly under shoulders, then slide them 6 inches wider with your head centered between.
Right knee is centered on top of stability ball with shin resting on ball.  Keep right thigh perpendicular to floor throughout.  The tendency is to lose control of the ball by letting it roll away from you and opening the angle of the hip.  You must activate the flexors in the right leg to prevent this from happening.
Start with left leg bent next to the right leg.  Then activate left glute and hip extensor muscles (bottom of butt/top of hamstring) to extend leg diagonally forming a straight line from your shoulders to the heel.  (see picture)
Maintain good core posture by pulling your shoulder blades together, tightening your abs, and keeping the pelvis in neutral to prevent low back arching.
This is a tough one so you might want to enlist a trusted friend to help you on the first few reps.  Ask them to squat down on the floor on the opposite side of the ball and hold it steady while you perform the vertical thrust.
Do two sets of 15 reps twice a week and you'll be ready to kick some booty on the bike!

Safety Tip
How can I be sure my bike is safe?
It is always a good idea to make sure everything on your bicycle is working correctly.  Get in the habit of checking that the brakes are working, and be sure there are no loose or broken parts on your bike.  Reflectors and lights make you and your bicycle more visible to car drivers in the dark.  Consider taking your bicycle to a bike shop for a professional tune-up from time to time.
