In bringing forth life from the earth, we sow the seeds of hope and opportunity. When we build gardens together, we build community together; when we feed each other, we feed ourselves; with our hands in the soil together, we are all connected.

Mimbres Farmers Market
farmers market pic
I recently had the chance to speak with Steve Nienhaus, co-manager of the Mimbres Farmers Market. Steve began as The Volunteer Center's community garden manager in 2009. With the belief that community gardens are a very important piece of meeting community needs, Steve has stayed heavily involved with The Volunteer Center, the Mimbres community garden, as well as the Mimbres Farmers Market. The Mimbres Farmers Market is a co-project of The Volunteer Center and the Mimbres Valley Health Action League. The Mimbres Farmers Market is open to the public every Thursday from 4:30pm-6:30pm. Growers arrive at 3:45 to set up. Steve is very excited to be part of the hard work that goes into the Mimbres Farmers Market and in the bigger picture Steve would eventually like to establish more solidarity with all of the farmers markets in Grant County. Steve believes that every farmers market in Grant County has a positive impact on the community, and would like to work on establishing such things as a common logo for Grant County farmers markets and collaborating with other farmers markets for promotion. The Volunteer Center is very proud to be part of the Mimbres Farmers Market and we encourage everyone who can to get out to Mimbres and support some of our community's finest growers!
The Mimbres Community Garden update!

mimbres gardenThe community garden movement is progressively expanding and growing in the Mimbres community. The Volunteer Center began as an original sponsor of the community garden "King Garden" in Mimbres. Steven Nienhaus started King Garden and secured the donation of the property thanks to Dr. King. As the King Garden has grown in participation and acreage, Mimbres community members have chipped in to make sure that community gardening continues to grow and be an option for all community members who wish to participate. Owners of the private Sky Roots Garden, Susan Wilger and Tyrone Wright, have been gracious enough to allow members of the Mimbres community to grow on their land. Certain areas of the Sky Roots Garden where community members are growing their own plots, are now considered an extension of the King Garden. The involvement, participation, and cooperation that is taking place in Mimbres is truly commendable and a fine example of how powerful community can be.

The Grant County Food Policy Council

The Grant County Food Policy Council is part of the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities initiative to address childhood obesity in Grant County. The Food Council will consist of a diverse group of members who aim to educate community members about food issues as well as advocate for policies and changes that will  focus on food access, production, distribution, and consumption. The Grant County Food Policy Council's mission statement is "to coordinate all departments of county government, local communities, as well as non-profit organizations and food/farming/ranching businesses in a common effort to improve the availability of safe, nutritious food (local when possible) at fair prices, in order to improve the health and quality of life for all residents of Grant County, particularly those in need". To get involved and show your support call: (575)388-1198 ext. 14 or email asauer@grmc.org.

Petition Text:
"We the undersigned ask that the Grant County Board of Commissioners adopt a resolution establishing the Grant County Food Policy Council to raise public awareness, identify needs and solutions, and recommend policies regarding food and agricultural issues in Grant County.  Further, the Food Policy Council will be comprised of diverse community representatives appointed by the County Board of Commissioners to implement the vision for a viable local food system.

In addition, we the undersigned ask that the Grant County Board of Commissioners include in the resolution provisions for establishing a county-wide food policy that supports an economically-vibrant and environmentally-sound local food system in Grant County and Southwestern New Mexico and promotes nutritious, affordable, accessible, and secure food for all residents, particularly those in need."
