In bringing forth life from the earth, we sow the seeds of hope and opportunity. When we build gardens together, we build community together; when we feed each other, we feed ourselves; with our hands in the soil together, we are all connected.

Greetings!
The Volunteer Center is very excited to keep the summer moving along by staying involved in ongoing programs that reach out to the community. June was a very beautiful and productive month, and we look forward to continuing our work through the month of July. |
 | Community Gardens! | I was able to sit down with The Volunteer Center's Community Garden Coordinator Hillary Nicklas and get an overview of each community garden along with their intended functions.
-The Mimbres Community Garden consists mostly of individual and family plots that are tended by community members. -The Comunity Garden on 13th Street is being established in the hope of becoming a food production garden for the food pantry. -The Bayard Community Garden is continually making great improvements with the help of volunteers and community members. The long term goal for the Bayard Community Garden is to become a self sustaining permaculture garden. -The Hudson St. Community Garden in Silver City consists of individual plots that are tended by community members. -WNMU's Student/Community garden is continually moving forward with the ideal intent of becoming a garden that students and community members can share together. -The Penny Park Community Garden was established by the Grant County JPPO and is continually growing and providing a great work space for the youth. The summer is a particularly great time to reach out to youth members of the community, and that is exactly what The Volunteer Center is doing with activities every Friday at the Community Garden on 13th St. The Community Garden on 13th St. is partnered with Silver Consolidated Schools as a site for the summer lunch and back pack programs. The month of July will also offer work days for community members at the Community Garden on 13th St and the Bayard Community Garden. Above all, the main goal behind every one of these community gardens is the idea of a sustainable local food system along with providing the community a common place to gather, learn, work, and socialize together. For more information about the community gardens, visit our website www.voluntersofgrantcounty.org. |
 | Ramps for Elderly |
Member of the Volunteer Center staff, Mindy Martinez, and volunteer, David Kolhoff, have been working together on building handicap accessible ramps for elderly women's households in the community. Many senior community members have needed handicap accessible ramps put in their homes for some time but have simply not been provided the resources to do so. The Volunteer Center has had the privilege of providing elderly female community members with handicap accessible ramps in their homes through the great work of volunteer David Kolhoff, who is a licensed contractor. The program's resources and materials are provided through a privately funded program for female headed households throughout Grant County called Miel de Mi Corzon. Mindy and Dave started this program in February of 2010 and are preparing to finish up ongoing projects through the month of July. The two hope to have every project done by August which will be the last month that the program will be funded. The Volunteer Center is very proud to have staff and volunteers dedicated to programs such as this that provide a great and needed service to members of our community.

 | Mobile Food Pantries | |
We believe that the mobile food pantries have been a key resource in meeting our community hunger needs. For the month of July our plan is to simply keep moving forward and make sure that every community member that needs assistance is benefiting from the mobile food pantries. Planner/volunteer Shelby Cox hopes that the Volunteer Center's mobile food pantries can inspire others, such as churches and non-profit organizations, to step up and participate in existing projects and possibly create new projects. In the bigger picture, Shelby hopes that Grant County can reach a point of success similar to that of Hachita, New Mexico, where community members run their own distributions. We hope to use the month of July to get closer to our goal and keep the mobile food pantries up and running. |
