Murray E. Nelson Government Center in Key Largo
Four images from Alan S. Maltz are part of a permanent installation at the $10.8 million Murray E. Nelson Government and Cultural Center in Key Largo, Fla.

Maltz is one of five artists whose images were chosen by the Monroe County Art in Public Places Committee to create site-specific artwork to enhance and complement the building.

The Murray E. Nelson Government Center"The art is ... a real tribute to Murray's love of the Keys environment," says Mary Nelson, wife of Murray E. Nelson, the building's namesake. "It ... creates tranquility and makes a connection to history for all its visitors."

Maltz's series of fine art photographs are displayed above the main entrance doors. His images reflect in color, subject matter and spirit the essence of the natural beauty found in the waters of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. Titled "Close Encounters," the series shows close-ups of four coral species: Symmetrical Brain, Great Star, Elkhorn and Boulder Brain.

The Nelson Government Center is a two-story, 32,000-square-foot structure named after the Upper Keys county commissioner for his dedication to public service to the people of Monroe County. The center includes offices and a 250-seat auditorium and features a large grassy park, picnic pavilions, docks and a boat ramp on Tarpon Basin. It is located bayside at 102050 Overseas Hwy. in Key Largo (mile marker 102).

The open lobby design features work by Maltz and local artists Stephen Frink, John David Hawver, Cris Sandifer and Xavier Cortada. These works of art are part of Monroe County's progressive 1 percent ordinance for Art in Public Places that established funding for public art.

The dedication and grand opening celebration was held on Tuesday, Feb. 17 with Maltz in attendance.

"Photography for me expresses a natural, intuitive sense of knowing what to do and when to do it," Maltz said. "I am honored to exhibit these murals of Florida's spectacular environment, spiritual and inspirational works of art, at Starmark International, which shares a similar creative vision and intuition."

More than 20 additional works from the Alan S. Maltz Gallery, located in Key West, were also on display at the reception. Invited guests had the opportunity to meet the artist, network with friends and enjoy a Florida-themed menu of hors d'oeuvres. Winners of the business card drawing took home a signed copy of Maltz's book "Florida ... Beyond the Blue Horizon" and an original lithograph titled "Florida ... A Natural Inspiration."
