Something Old...
Something New
In a fanciful blend of past and present, classic ornate objects are retired from their previous use and redefined for imaginative and practical purposes. The result...uniquely stylish contemporary designs of jewelry, handbags and accessories imbued with nostalgic vintage flair. A recent conversation with the artist reveals the mind set behind her work.
Can you remember the first time you looked at an item and decided that you wanted to recreate it into another form of art? What was that item before its transformation and what did it become? Two different thoughts come to me...I was a little girl and my grandma wanted to make Christmas ornaments so she pulled out an old wallpaper sample book and we took sheets from it to make little cone shaped ornaments to hang on the tree and then filled them with treats. I thought she was so creative! Another thought. that comes to mind was when I was in junior high school and I made a book bag from a pair of old jeans...everyone wanted one!
What is it about vintage creations that appeal to you? Nostalgia I guess...fond memories of simpler times, I loved playing with Grandmas buttons and jewelry. I also think the resourcefulness of the whole thing as well. I appreciate the creativity that comes from utilizing what you have.
What message do you feel you are communicating by bringing these pieces to your customers? What feelings do you hope to invoke when someone wears one of these designs? I really enjoy showing people just how creative they are. In the beginning of collaborating for a special custom order a client will insist they are not creative in any way...but by the end of the project they are so full of joy because they have realized -they are creative and they have this one-of-a-kind design to prove it!
What are some of your favorite "old" items to work with?
I love, love, buttons! And old trims, ties and fabric are all a close second! I can't help wondering where they've been -they really mesmerize me and I often spend a great deal of time looking for just the perfect one to finish a design!
What item has had the most dramatic transformation into a new purpose?
Children's clothes are really fun to see...I think mothers and grandmothers get a real kick out of seeing remnants of their children's clothing in a handbag or diaper bag.
I also think it's a really good feeling to see something beautiful made from an item of a loved one who has passed. Buttons, old jewelry, grandpa's tie...it's a real connection in a creative way!
If you could go back on any era in time, when would it be and what would you bring back to the present?
Absolutely the 20's....the style was amazing and still so inspiring!

In keeping with our resolutions -we continue our efforts to help those less fortunate
Hearts for the Homeless...
During a time of financial hardship and economic uncertainty, individuals and families are finding it harder to sustain a viable standard of living, dramatically increasing the rate of homelessness. Even here in the city of Rochester, community service agencies struggle to meet the rapidly growing needs for food and shelter.
Talulah's Fancy invites you to join our project "Hearts for the Homeless", in an effort to help support The House of Mercy - a Rochester based homeless shelter -in their mission to feed, clothe, and house those in need.
Please join us and warm the heart of someone less fortunate. Yours will be happier for it!
Unique, one of a kind, hand-made Heart Broaches have been designed by artist Tamara Stopinski. Made from an "up-cycled" assorted fabrics, each heart is hand made and adorned with vintage buttons and trims. The cost per broach is $10 or free with any $100 Talulah's Fancy purchase.
This year, in addition to the heart broaches, raffle tickets for a chance to win this fine silver
necklace created by Tamara Stopinski will also be available. Tickets are $10 or one free with every $100 Talulah's Fancy purchase available
The drawing will be held on March 31st.
100% of the proceeds collected from "Hearts for the Homeless" sales will be donated to The House of Mercy to aid in providing shelter. To find out more about this charitable organization contact them directly at www.HouseOfMercyRochester.org

I hope your holidays were pleasant and joyful and you've had time to enjoy them. It seems to me some slowing down is in order and I for one have been taking my time to plan my new year resolutions, plans and projects with sincere contemplation.
Some people don't like to make resolutions and I can understand why but I really do, I think it's one of the fun things to get excited about for the new year! This year my focus will be to try and create more often and with less. For me the act of creating is the most nourishing feeling I am blessed to experience. I have been reminded lately that it takes very little to create and if you you really think about it -it's true.
You can take simple leftovers and create a delicious soup or stew! Or go outside and make a snowman with a few items you already have. Then enjoy him from the comfort of your cozy chair by the window with a cup of that yummy soup you made! You not only transformed leftovers into something yummy and made that snowman but you also created an experience to savor and enjoy!
You don't need to be a an acclaimed artist, top chef, famous performer or astute writer to be creative. Just taking the time to jot down a thought in your journal, dance around your living room, draw or doodle an image in a sketch pad is enough to get that sense of nourishment -as long and you do it without judgment and for the pure sake of doing it!
This new year I will post a creative inspiration in each newsletter and then post images of those who wish to share what they've done in response to it. Please remember it's the act of creating that is the focus - no judging! If this is the only resolution I keep - it will be the most worthy. I hope you will join me...;~) Happy New Year!
Much love, and creative wishes to you! - Tamara
This seasons inspiration;
"the snowman" be it an actual snowman, story, poem, sketch or decorated cookie...create anything you want and then send me some images!
