Hear From Jinny & We'd Like to Hear From You!
| Internet Radio Interview with Jinny
In December, Pat Sloan, a wonderful quilter and teacher, interviewed me for the American Patchwork & Quilting internet radio show. We talked about a range of topics, from my time in India to why I hand quilt. You can hear the interview at the link below. Click on the link and scroll down to the December 8th show. My particular portion of the show begins at the 15:00 mark. Enjoy!
Please Tell us: Have You Ever "Shop Hopped"?
Each year, Jinny Beyer Studio participates in a local quilting shop hop in which quilters are encouraged to visit the dozen or so shops in our area. We're curious about whether there's a shop hop in your area and whether you've ever participated. What do you like best? Please take two or three minutes to complete our short survey about your experiences -- it will help us make our shop hop even more enjoyable for your fellow quilters in this area.

Stained Glass Star -- The Back Story Behind Our Logo & Best-Selling Quilt Kit
| This week, we've just released a brand-new version of my Stained Glass Star quilt and I wanted to share with you how it came about.
In 1990, my son Darren was a web designer. After telling me that I had to get into the modern age with a web site, he set it up and then told me that it needed a logo. He suggested that I create one using one of my "fragmented" designs. (Fragmenting quilt block units into smaller pieces was a design strategy I was exploring deeply at the time and continue to use today. See the tip on Fragmenting later in this newsletter.)
Working from the traditional Rolling Star block, I divided the squares and diamonds in the block into smaller squares and diamonds, and created a digital image with shaded colors.

When the web site went live, we started getting emails asking if there was a pattern for the design on the home page. There wasn't, but I quickly wrote a pattern and chose fabrics for a kit. Stained Glass Star is the first kit we did for the website and it remains just as popular today as it was in 1990.
Periodically, I update the kit, adding new borders and re-shading the fabrics in the star. This latest update is one of my favorites: I really love how the narrow stripe of border print around the star sparkles.
 | |
Stained Glass Star is available in two sizes, two colorways, and with multiple border choices.
| There are two main colorways for the quilt (teal and gold), and a wide variety of border options. The kit is available in two sizes: the small version is shown above on the left and right, and the large version is in the center.
One of the best parts of the quilt? All the square and diamond patches are pre-cut so you can get straight to the sewing! More information on Stained Glass Star.

Fragmentation: Create a Quilt from a Single Block
| I often use fragmenting when designing quilts. The concept of fragmenting a traditional patchwork block is not new -- it has been used for centuries with the traditional Lone Star design.
In a Lone Star quilt, each of the diamonds of a traditional eight-pointed star has been broken up into the same number of smaller diamonds. In these designs, each round of diamonds from the center outwards is the same fabric.
 |
The quilt on the left is a traditional Lone Star design. Star Sapphire, right, is fragmented the same way, but the color shading makes for a very different look.
|
I used this same idea to create Star Sapphire. Each of the diamonds has been broken into eight divisions per side, but the coloring is different from the traditional way a Lone Star is colored.
 |
Mayflowers (left) has fragmented square, diamond and triangle units. Rajasthan(center) is a new quilt that's available for pre-order; it includes fragmented triangular and diamond shapes. Summer Lily (right) has fragmented diamonds; and even the background shapes are fragmented -- with strips!
