November 5, 2011
 Greetings!

Happy November to you! I spent the very end of last month in Houston at the semi-annual Quilt Market. It's always a whirlwind.  This year I lectured on color to quilt shop owners; worked with designers for my fabric manufacturer, RJR Fabrics, to finalize some of the my collections for 2012; and prowled the vendor exhibits looking for goodies to feature in my shop in Virginia and on the website.

Market is also the place where I can meet up with old friends from the world of quilting. Here I am with John and Alex Anderson, Ricky Tims, and Justin Shultz.  Ricky, Justin and I also managed to grab a meal together at Ninfas, an amazing Mexican restaurant in Houston.  I loved it so much I went back another night and had dinner with Susan and Gary McLaughlin of Capital Quilts in Rockville, MD!

I also wanted to let you know about a beautiful new book from the Quilter's Hall of Fame.  It features "42 masters who have shaped the art" and includes more than 100 big color images of landmark quilts and profiles of the 42 people who have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. I was recognized by the Quilter's Hall of Fame in 1984 and am pleased to be included in the book.  We expect to receive the books this week and you can pre-order your copy right now.

Now that I'm home again, I've been starting to think about a new block of the month quilt for you. I'd love to know what you think -- please take about a minute to answer our one-question survey below!

Something Special For You If You Can't Come to our Shop Hop . . . .
Our local Maryland/Northern Virginia shop hop is this coming week.  Although many of you wanted to purchase a kit for our Quilter's Quest quilt, it is only available for those who make the Quest in person. So I created this wonderful bag which is available to everyone.

The Midnight Garden Tote features the colors in the quilt and a panel that uses a variation of the appliqué flowers in the quilt. (If you're not a fan of appliqué, the kit includes enough fabric to make a pretty patchwork star block instead.)

Midnight Garden Bundle
If you've got a different type of project in mind, or just can't resist the fabrics, the Studio elves have put together a fat quarter bundle of 12 of the fabrics featured in the Quilter's Quest quilt. I'm told that a few bundles have already found homes with my elves!

YLI Thread YLI Thread Now Available
YLI now joins Aurifil in our thread department.  I love Aurifil 28 wt. for hand piecing (and my staff swears by the 50 wt. for machine piecing and quilting) . . . and now I'm enjoying using YLI's hand-quilting thread.

We're carrying the hand-quilting thread in a wide variety of colors and in two different sizes.  We've also added some gorgeous variegated threads in 40 wt. that machine quilters will enjoy. Click here to see all the new YLI threads.

Ask Jinny:  How Do You Choose Colors?
Sometimes I get inspired by the colors I see on a walk or on a piece of artwork. But I find it really hard to choose fabrics that capture the same look.  How do you do it?
A Quilter from Chautauqua

This is a question I hear a lot when I'm meeting with or teaching quilters. Of course, there's no substitute for "training your eye" by simply practicing.  And you do need to have a wide variety of fabrics to choose from.  (See, another reason to buy more fabric!)

This is the original photo that inspired my Summer Lily collection, the automatically generated 256-color palette, and the final palette I selected.
However, there is one technique that I use all the time -- and I used it when designing my Summer Lily quilt and fabric collection. What's the secret? I use Adobe Photoshop to create a "palette" of the colors used in an image that I like. If you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements you can do the same thing.  If you don't have either of those programs, you can still create a palette using your printer and some scissors!

Creating the palette is just a starting point, but I give you details about how to do this and other tips to try, on my website at Ask Jinny.
