Greetings!

Do you plant a garden?  I am fortunate enough to have a very large vegetable garden at home, as well as a variety of flower beds.  Earlier this week, a rather famous quilting teacher came for a visit and we spent a little time at one of my favorite gardens -- my floral "quilt garden".  You can see who my mystery visitor was and see pictures of the garden on my website.

I want to thank everyone who became a Facebook fan of Jinny Beyer Studio since our last newsletter. More than 3,600 of you are keeping up with our happenings there.  And we also congratulate the three winners of the Summer Lily bundles -- Mary P. of Center, TX, Helen L. of Helena, MT and Maureen C. of Lexington, KY.

Do you like free stuff?  Of course you do; everyone does!  Well, this issue of our newsletter is packed with free stuff.  We had lots of fun putting it all together for you so enjoy and please encourage your friends to subscribe, too!

Something Special for You if You EQ
Palette 10
Jinny Beyer Palette Collection #10 for EQ
Last month we asked you whether you use Electric Quilt (EQ) in designing your quilts.  Almost 40% of you do!

So, we've packaged up all 150 fabrics in my Palette Collection #10 and made it available for use in the EQ7 design program! And it's absolutely free.

Just think, now you can play with all my shaded fabrics in your own quilts -- without having to pick up your scissors or cut into actual fabric.

Once you're happy with the design, you'll know exactly which fabrics to order.

To download the Palette Collection #10 fabric library, click on the image or visit the link below.  Enjoy!

Ask Jinny: What If I Don't Want to Foundation Piece?

Tina from Champagne, IL is a woman after my own heart! This was her recent question:

I love to hand piece yet I've noticed that many of the kits, including the new Summer Lily [quilt], seem to show how to only make the quilt using strip piecing methods. Can you tell me a way to easily covert that to hand piecing. Thanks!

As you probably know, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool hand-sewer.  However, there's no question that many quilters absolutely love the speed of strip piecing and the accuracy in foundation piecing. So I design many quilts that take advantage of those techniques.

Converting a FoundationFortunately, it's not difficult to convert one of these patterns to traditional quiltmaking approaches.  In general, you need to:

  • trace each patch
  • add 1/4-inch seam allowances to all sides
  • mark the appropriate information on the templates

I've put together detailed information and diagrams in the new tip on Converting Foundation-Piecing Patterns For Traditional Sewing Techniques on my website.  Next month, we'll tackle converting patterns that use strip-piecing!

Great question, Tina.  Thanks!

Jinny's Journey Block of the Month -

Luggage TagsIn every journey, it serves us well to take a little break.  So this month, rather than giving you a new block, we have a Jinny's Journey Extra for you!

We've created this pattern for a luggage tag -- perfect for you to whip up and take with you wherever you might be headed in the next couple of months.

The tag uses scraps of fabric and batting, and a little piece of vinyl.  You can get vinyl at your local craft store, or do what our pattern writer, Elaine, did:  she cut up one of those vinyl bags in which sheet sets are often sold.  Now that's thinking creatively!
