Greetings!

I am thrilled to be home again after what seems like months of travel.  I love teaching and visiting foreign places, but it is also wonderful to be back at my house especially as the garden starts to take off.

Last month we asked you about Facebook . . . and the results surprised me! (See the first item below.)  This month, we want to know if you use Electric Quilt to help you design quilts.  Please take a moment to answer our one-question poll below.

Do you use Electric Quilt (EQ) in your quilt design process?
Join Us on Facebook and Win!
Image of Facebook pageWe asked you whether you used Facebook recently and it surprised me to learn that about 35% of you are avid Facebook users! Since you are on Facebook, we decided that we should be on Facebook, too.

So now there's a Jinny Beyer Studio Facebook page!

To encourage you to visit our Facebook page and become a fan, we've created a little contest. Some time next week, we will randomly select three of you who "like" us. Each will win a fat quarter bundle of my new Summer Lily fabrics!

Help us stay in touch -- and maybe win some free fabric -- by clicking on the button below and then the LIKE button.

Be Ready Early with a New Christmas Project
Holiday Treasures CollectionI often find myself down to the wire getting sewing projects ready for the holidays.  So I'm happy to announce that my new Holiday Treasures fabric collection and quilt are available today!  You'll have no excuse not to have something wonderful and new around your home at Christmas!

The collection includes a toile with scenes of Christmases-past, florals, a paisley and a border print with a very intricate design. You can order any of the fabrics by the yard or get the whole collection in a Holiday Treasures Fat Quarter Sampler.

Holiday Treasures QuiltI hope you like the new quilt design, too.  Scenes cut from the toile peek out from sashing reminiscent of window frames.  The quilt finishes 51" square so it's perfect for a wall or even as a table topper. The kit is available now (and it includes a bonus project to use up fabric leftovers!) and the pattern is a free download.

Small projects are great for immediate gratification so I also designed a Holiday Treasures Table Runner.  There are no set-in seams, so it works up quickly.
I hope you'll agree that it will add an elegant touch to any holiday table. You can find details on the kit and pattern on our website.

Ask Jinny: Hand Sewing Tips

HandsewingI received two questions recently from quilters who sew by hand, and I thought you might be interested in my responses, too.

First, from Kim Bennett in Lake Oswego OR:

Hi, Jinny. I am hand piecing a quilt for my daughter using a Gold'n Glide needle (size 10) and 28-weight Aurifil thread. My problem is the thread is fraying and breaking. What am I doing wrong? Should I be using a heavier thread or a larger/smaller needle?

Kim, your needle and thread should be just fine.  I suspect that the problem is with the position of your needle and thread on the thimble.  Make sure that the thread is not getting caught between the needle and the thimble -- that pressure and friction will certainly weaken the thread and could cause the kind of problems you're having.

And from Nancy (we're not sure where she lives!):

Why don't you start your seam at the edge of your fabric? I can understand starting in 1/4" when you have to set in angles but not on straight piecing.

As long as the seam is not set in, I generally start my seam somewhere convenient near the edge of the patch.  Starting right at the edge is unnecessary and actually not ideal:  it's more difficult to position your hands to begin stitching right at the edge and you can also cause fraying at the cut edge.  Great question!

The complete kit (with three border options) and a fabric bundle of just the shaded fabrics are available.  Visit the Jinny's Journey kit page for details.
