What do we have, happiness or joy?  Are they one and the same?  Are the two simply a choice of words to describe the same thing?  Sometimes we use the words that way, but I think they are very different.  Happiness comes when things are going the way we want them to go.  Unhappiness comes when things go wrong.  They depend on what "happens".  Joy cuts across things that happen or don't happen the way we might like.

There are two verses in the Scriptures that speak to this.  One is from John 15 where Jesus tells His disciples in the Upper Room the night before His crucifixion.  "These things I have spoken to you", He said, "that my joy may be in you and your joy may be full." (John 15:11)  That night this joy brought tears to their eyes.  The other verse is from Hebrews.  "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross." (Hebrews 12:2a)

Jesus wasn't jumping up and down with glee from the pain of the cross, but He did have joy because of doing His Father's will and because of what was being accomplished for mankind through His death.  Joy often comes to us in times of distress.

Some months ago I was asked to do a memorial service for a dear friend I had known for nearly fifty years.  The family of the deceased gathered in a room before the service for a time of prayer.  Then the two of us who were presiding at the memorial led the family into the church.  Just as we were entering the church there was a little boy who grabbed hold of my finger and walked beside me as the family followed us into the church.  His fingers holding mine brought a tear of joy to my eyes.  In the midst of death there was joy. Jesus wants our joy to be full, even in difficult circumstances.

God bless you.  Paul says, "Be joyful always, pray continually."

Love in Him,

Pastor Clio
