UPCOMING WEST VALLEY EVENTS

November Fellowship Meal On Sunday
Our next fellowship meal is this Sunday, Nov. 20th. It will be a true "potluck," so bring along your favorite casserole, side dish, salad or dessert to share! This might be a great time to try out that new recipe you've been wanting to make for the holidays!
Decorating for Advent-November 20th
The sanctuary and fellowship hall will be decorated for the Advent season following the potluck on Nov. 20th. Please see Sandy Tonseth if you would like to help.
Advent Choir Rehearsals-Nov. 20 -Dec. 18
It adds so much to Advent worship when the church family who love to sing bring their joy to the singing and celebration. Rehearsals are from 12:30 - 1:00 on Nov. 20, Dec. 4, 11, and 18. Except for November 20th, a sack lunch is suggested.
Pointsettia Orders
Orders for Christmas Pointsettias will be taken starting Sunday, November 20th. The plants will be used to decorate the church sanctuary for Advent and may be purchased in honor or in memory of someone special to you. Each plant is $10.00 and may be taken home following Advent. An order form will be found in the weekly service bulletin or you may contact the church via office@westvalleychurch.org for more information.

THANKSGIVING EVE
Twas the night of Thanksgiving, and I just couldn't sleep. I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned, the dark meat and white, But I fought the temptation with all of my might.
Tossing and turning with anticipation, The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door, And gazed at the fridge full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, Till all of a sudden, I rose off the ground!
I crashed through the ceiling. Floating into the sky, With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But I managed to yell as I soared past the trees...
Happy eating to all!
Pass the cranberries, please!

West Valley In Our Community
THOMAS JEFFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL: Administration Tea
West Valley recently hosted an event inviting parents and TJ Administrators to meet off campus to discuss issues and concerns that have plagued the school in recent months. Approximately 15-20 people attended the Tea and the Administration was pleased with the turnout and grateful for the use of the West Valley facilities. Our new Community Outreach Catalyst, Dawn Valarde, used this opportunity to speak with the administration about collaborating on more community events for the High School. We are very excited to see what the future holds for this growing relationship.
WEST VALLEY FOOD PANTRY: Families In Need
This is the time of year when food bank activity picks up in earnest. The weather is changing, holidays are around the corner and families are struggling mightily. Canned soups, meats, vegetables will always be needed and that Mac & Cheese is always a great donation for families with kids. Stuffing mixes and seasonal items for Thanksgiving or Christmas would be a wonderful addition. If you need help for ideas talk to Mary Seal or Margaret Post. PLEASE NOTE: Food banks cannot distribute any food item past its expiration date!
THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR GENEROSITY!

One Minute Meditation For Thanksgiving
"Let's go over the list once more," I mutter to myself at the check-out stand. "Oatmeal, frying chickens, and a half gallon of rocky road. Yuban® coffee and a couple loaves of Roman Meal® bread. A gallon of milk about rounds it out."
The register whirrs. I plunk down my money.
"Thanks," I say to the checker. "Don't thank me," the grocery checker chuckles. "You pays your money, you takes your choice."
No thanks needed? Your forefathers' hands caressed hard seed grains as they sowed freshly-turned furrows. They knew whom to thank.
"A man scatters seed on the ground," Jesus observed. "Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come." (Mark 4:26-29)
No wonder Pilgrims gave thanks.
But the average person lives too far from the soil to awe at amber waves of grain. I had glanced at my watch and tapped my foot while the checker worked slowly through the loaded grocery cart ahead of me. So what's to be thankful for? Shorter lines?
Yes, for starters. Women stand in lines for hours in Moscow to buy fresh fruit. The selection on our supermarket shelves would boggle the mind of a Mexican villager.
We thank God for a job to pay for our food--thousands are out of work. We thank God for a warm home and a table to eat at-the homeless live out of their cars at the park.
"But I work hard for what I have," you object. Yes, so does the Chinese peasant bending over in a cold rice paddy.
You pays your money, but you can't buy health. You pays your money, but you can't buy a son or a daughter. You pays your money, but you can't buy rain to water crops in Peoria and Des Moines.
Thank you God, for the gifts you've given which I have no inherent right to.
Make me genuinely grateful. Amen.
