Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes.... It is a bit of sad commentary when those of us, who spent a significant portion of our youth in the 70's, cannot help but have David Bowie's manifesto invade our senses every time we start out an article on the topic of 'change'... (Sigh)
Many of you have no doubt wondered what has been going on with the Connection and may also have noticed some changes in the office staffing at West Valley. I wanted to take a very brief moment of your time to bring you up to date and to mention, for those of you who are unable to attend regularly, some of the exciting changes that are ahead of us in the next year at West Valley.
First, Tracey Coon, our part-time office help and bookkeeper, announced her decision to leave WV to accept a position with another church. Tracey's departure last spring came at a critical point in our conversion to an entirely new bookkeeping system but the implementation went forward with associated bumps and bruises but we are blessed to announce that a new bookkeeper has recently been hired to work with Pat Hogan, our Treasurer. Secondly, the administrative portion of Tracey's job - the weekly church bulletin, inserts, Enews, web site and other functions are now a co-operative effort by Keith and me. Equipment issues, software issues and other distractions have all contributed to interruptions in 'service' but we expect those bugs have all been worked out now so we look forward to regularly scheduled issues from this point forward - I hope you do too! Other Changes: New Church Directory! We are in the process of putting together updated information for a revised West Valley Directory. Carol Aguilar and Pat Hogan are coordinating this effort and Dawn Valarde is valiantly attempting to corral us all for photographic evidence of our membership (names to faces, if you will...). If you have had changes in your contact information but have not filled out a form, you may still provide us information by sending the new information to Pat: bphogan1@aol.com or Carol: garfield461@q.com Facilities Changes! The Congregational meeting in August led to the approval of several changes affecting our facilities. In brief: - The existing sanctuary pews will be change out for pew-chairs
- The BBQ area is being expanded/improved and roofline has been extended for greater protection from the elements
- The portable will be relocated and expanded by an additional level for Christian education purposes. A 4-person task force is currently in development for the design/layout phase of the project.
- The Hanson's have moved to their new digs and a design team will start working on the vision process for converting the rambler to a new recreation center.
Other changes were also approved but these are simply some of the highlights we wanted to share with you. Additional updates will be published as we move forward with these exciting projects. Keith will readily share with you that he has his hands full working with me and I might say the same ... He picks on me... and I pick on him. If he had his way, we would have 50 weeks of boating-related bulletin covers, 2 weeks devoted to hunting... This week's cover is my attempt to give the mighty hunter his due. Lately I've been working on him to provide us with an office dog. Rumor has it I might have struck gold... Have a blessed week! Margaret |

West Valley In Our Community:
Operation Nightwatch: SOCK IT TO HOMELESSNESS
Every October Operation Nightwatch hosts an event called "Sock It to Homelessness" - an event designed to collect new socks to give to the thousands of homeless folks through out the year. In 2010, groups and churches like West Valley collected over 25,000 pairs of socks during this drive and every pair was given away over the course of the year. John and Jody Fenlason will once again be coordinating the West Valley efforts so if you have any questions please contact them directly. Sock donations may be brought to the church between October 16th and October 30th.

Thomas Jefferson HS: TEACHER APPRECIATION

"I got my gift bag today!!! IT WAS SOOOO AWESOME! Everybody loved them!"
- Jan Eldridge, Thomas Jefferson teacher, in an email to friends
Teachers at TJ, like teachers in many districts, have been under great pressure - from an ongoing budget crisis to changes in the system of education standards. Over time, these pressures wear on those in whom we entrust to educate our children and at times, they may feel unappreciated. West Valley is blessed with generous souls who recognize the sacrifice of dedicated teachers and several decided to let the teachers at Thomas Jefferson know that their efforts are appreciated. Dawn and Jay Valarde, Sandy Tonseth, Brandon Tonseth, Pat Hogan and Margaret Post each had a part in putting together 160 gifts for the staff at TJ. Special thanks to Cutter's Point Coffee of Kent for their donation to this outreach effort.
West Valley Food Pantry: SHARING OUR ABUNDANCE
Thank you to everyone who provided goods last Communion Sunday to replenish our Food Pantry shelves. Mary Seal and Margaret Post found an unusual problem-TOO much food for the shelving! Your generosity wasn't lost though! They packed up two large bins of excess food items and delivered the goods to the Federal Way Multi-Service Center Food Bank which was so thankful! Mary would like you to know that the Pantry has an abundance of chicken noodle soup, Ragu and tomato sauce. Canned soups, meats, vegetables will always be needed and that Mac & Cheese is always a great donation for families with kids. If you are stuck for ideas on what to bring on Communion Sundays or on your next trip to donate to your local food bank, a partial list of items is noted below. Please note, this listing is not exhaustive and we welcome input for improving the information as well as suggestions for new activities or outreach opportunities.

One Minute Meditations

In David's "Saws" we read:
"God, brilliant Lord; yours is a household name. I look up at the macro-skies, dark and enormous,
your handmade sky-jewelry, moon and stars mounted in their settings.
Then I look at my micro-self and wonder:
Why do you bother with us? Why take a second look our way? I wonder why you care, God. Why do you bother with us at all? All we are is a puff of air. We are like shadows in a campfire.
We do not know the 'why', but we can praise God for all He does for us. He put us in charge of His hand-crafted world, made us lords of sheep and cattle, even animals out in the wild, birds flying and fish swimming, whales singing in the ocean depths.
God gets us ready for life. He probes for our soft spots, and knocks off our rough edges.
He holds the high center. He sees and sets the world's mess right.
He decides what is right for us earthlings, gives people their just desserts.
He gives us a safe-house for the battered, a sanctuary for bad times. The moment we arrive, we relax: We are never sorry we knocked."
I am praising you, God, brilliant Lord, for all you do for us. Your name echoes around the world!
