One-Minute Meditations
MeditationWe read in the Bible: "I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall continually be in my mouth."

Question: How often do we take time to express our thanks and praise to God for all our blessings? Do we tend to take everyday things for granted and hardly pause to give praise to the Creator for all He has done and He is still doing for us? Praise to God should be a life-long habit.

David thought praise to God very important and wrote of it often in his "Saws":

"I praise God every chance I get. My lungs expand with His praise. I lift you high in praise, my God, my King! And I will bless your name into eternity. God is magnificent; He can never be praised enough. There are no boundaries to His greatness. His marvelous doings are headline news; I could write a book full of the details of your greatness. My mouth is filled with God's praise.
Let everything living bless Him; Bless His holy name from now to eternity. Oh, my soul, praise God. Don't forget a single blessing! Praise the name of God; praise the works of God. God, your name is eternal. You will never be out of date. God stands up for His people. God holds the hands of His people. Shout your praises to God, everybody! Let loose and sing. Strike up the band!"
Library Corner
Two donated books are now out. One is Barbara Johnson's experience with brain cancer surgery and treatment. She is the funny lady of the Women of Faith Ministries and finds joy in some of the terrible times in her life. PLANT A GERANIUM IN YOUR CRANIUM is the title of this encouraging and sometimes funny story.  T.J. Jakes gives a heart warming tribute to women and mother's in MAMA MADE THE DIFFERENCE.

A group of books dealing with the Advent Christian Church, beliefs and doctrine have been pulled out for use. Two of the newer ones of the group are GOD'S STRANGE WORK by David Rowe who has thoroughly researched the life of William Miller, founder of our denomination. N.T. Wright's SURPRISED BY HOPE parallels many of the beliefs of our founding fathers. If you are curious about what our denomination is about, here are answers. There is also history of our beginnings and development up to this present time in which we worship together here at West Valley. This is an invitation to do a little mind stretching!

From Our Pastor Emeritus, Clio Thomas

Pastor Clio Thomas serves as "Area Director" for the Asia/Pacific mission field of the Advent Christian Denomination. One of his duties is to encourage mission workers in a variety of settings throughout Asia. The following is a weekly installment of his letter, sent literally around the world to those in his charge.

Dear Ones in Christ,

Participating in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper is certainly one of the most important things any of us ever do as Christians.  Having been a Pastor for over 50 years I still get a tear in my eyes every time I receive the bread and the cup, the body and blood of Jesus.  When Jesus shared that first meal with His disciples He asked them to keep this meal in remembrance of Him.

It is helpful in understanding the importance of "remembrance".  The word for remembering in the New Testament carries with it much more than an intellectual exercise.  To remember a person, or an event, is for that person or event to come alive again in one's own life.  In this sense to partake of the Lord's Supper and do it in remembrance of Jesus is for Him to be alive anew and afresh in one's own life.

What I am saying is that the taking of this sacrament is much more than taking of the bread and the cup, and reflecting on the fact that Jesus gave His life for the remission of our sins.  It is much more than intellectual reflection or memory.  In a very real and mysterious way the act of redemption is renewed in the participant's own life.  In a sense "to remember something" is to cause that something to happen again.  I guess that is why we say that some memories are joyful and hopeful, and others are painful.  It is more than the intellect at work.

In Luke 24 there is the story of the two angels who met the women outside the empty tomb on that first Easter Sunday.  The women were perplexed that they could not find the body of Jesus, and the men said, "Remember how He told you, while he was still with you in Galilee, 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again?'" Then they remembered His words.

To remember Jesus is to experience His presence!  May your remembrances be richly blessed.

Love in Him,
Pastor Clio

Women's Ministry Spring Retreat Coming Soon!
Women's retreat is coming soon! It will be at Warm Beach this year.
