Harvest Celebration October 24
Remember the great times we had at this year's church family picnic? Neither does anyone else! That's because we had to cancel on account of rain. So we've rescheduled the event and, instead of a picnic in the park, we will host a day of fun activities at the church, including "fair fare" (carnival-type food) and games. Mark your calendars and plan to be at the church for an afternoon of fellowship and fun, and please plan to bring a salad or dessert to share with the rest of us.
 Family Hour
After an extended hiatus, Sunday morning family time has resumed. The morning's activities begins with breakfast, cooked and served by the youth at 9:45. At 10:15 we will begin our lesson/activity time that includes the entire family. For the next several weeks we are focusing on Noah, so come prepared to drown in a flood of Biblical knowledge and great activities! ...well... maybe not "drown," but it should be fun anyway. *Special Reminder* Two of our core values are "Relationships are nurtured" and "Young Families and youth are ministered to." These are the goals of our Sunday family hour activities so please help us meet these goals by joining in - we need everyone involved, including you!
Christmas in October
Christmas in October is coming October 31. In October we celebrate our missionaries and on October 31 we will have a special donation for them. Further details to come.
Sock It to Homelessness
Homeless people are on their feet all day, and rarely have more than one pair of socks - and, those are often wet. Again this year West Valley will be supporting Operation Nightwatch by collecting socks for the homeless. Please bring pairs of white athletic socks and place them in the collection box in the back of the church. Bring them in as soon as possible, but we will collect through Sunday, October 10.
Men's Breakfast
The next men's breakfast is on Friday, October 22. We will be doing a study of Proverbs - please join us!
Prayer Request
Luanne Cisnero's grandson Armando will enter the hospital Tuesday morning, October 14 for reconstructive surgery on his face and head. We need to pray for a successful outcome. Luanne needs prayer for strength, peace and comfort.
Quilting Day
October 30 is Quilt Day. It will start at 9:30 am-2 pm, with lunch being provided. We welcome any lady who is interested in quilting to come join us and have a great day of fellowship, fun and working on quilts and or bibs....more details to come as the date gets closer.
From Our Pastor Emeritus, Clio Thomas

Pastor Clio Thomas serves as "Area Director" for the Asia/Pacific mission field of the Advent Christian Denomination. One of his duties is to encourage mission workers in a variety of settings throughout Asia. The following is a weekly installment of his letter, sent literally around the world to those in his charge.

Dear Ones in Christ,

You may be wondering why I keep thinking and writing about the Church of Jesus Christ.  It is because I think that the nature of the Church is a much neglected topic among Christians.  It seems to me that there is a disconnect in our contemporary thinking about Jesus Christ and the Church.  If we follow closely the teaching of the New Testament about the Church being the Body of Jesus Christ, then there are serious implications for how we not only perceive the Church, but also how we as individual Christians live in this world.  Jesus said, "I will build my Church."  He also said, "As the Father has sent me into the world, so I send you."  In the writings of the Apostle Paul he uses interchangeably the phrases: "Christ in you", and the Christian being "in Christ".  Let me put this another way.  Any statement we make about Christ is a statement about His Church, and any statement about the Church is a statement about Christ.

Now, what are some practical implications?

  1. Where there is disunity and infighting in the Body (the Church) it is a denial of the reconciling work of Jesus.  This does not mean that we have to agree intellectually on everything, but it does mean that we have to accept each other and live together in unity and love as a testimony to the world of the reconciling power of Jesus who is our Lord and Savior.
  2. Where there is a lack of love, not only for those in the Church, but for the world, we are living contrary to our dear Lord Jesus.  Did He not say, "You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'  But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven.'"  Love is not just a sentiment.  It must show itself in concrete action.  The Apostle John wrote: "Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and with truth." (1 John 3:18)  We must be Christ to every person we meet, otherwise they will never see Him.
  3. Our concern as Christians must be for all the world.  Jesus' mandate to the Church was and is to go into all the world with the Gospel, beginning in our Jerusalem, into our Judea, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth.  To do less than this is to deny our Lord's command.  A parochial self-centered Church is a denial of its very nature as the Body of Christ.

Remember today and every day that Christ is in you, and you are in Christ.  You and I are His Body, the Church, living and serving in this world.

God bless you, now and always!!

Love in Him,

Pastor Clio

Please Check Your Food Donations
If you donate food to the West Valley Food Bank, please check the expiration dates before donating. Some food items have been found that were dated from 2003 to 2006. Those items were pulled out and anything dated after that is still in pantry. Thanks for your assistance!
Invest in Our Youth
Recently, Pastor Brandon was chosen by ACGC to serve on the national student leadership commission. One of his new responsibilities involves meeting with other AC youth leaders from across the US. In November this board will meet in conjunction with the national youth workers convention, held in Nashville, TN. While many of Brandon's expenses will be covered by ACGC, not all are. Also, since this convention provides excellent training for lay youth leaders, West Valley will benefit greatly by sending another youth worker to accompany Brandon at this event. The CLT has voted to encourage Brandon to attend the convention with his wife, Becca, who works closely with him in youth ministry. Since this is an expense not directly covered by our budget, we are asking members to help support this endeavor by giving designated contributions. Both the Western Regional AC Association and the Western Washington and British Colombia Conference will also be asked to help cover the costs associated with this trip. If you would like to "Invest in Our Youth (workers!)" in this manner, please designate any contributions  as for "National Youth Workers Convention."
Women's Ministries
All West Valley women are invited to join our Women's Ministries group. Some of our projects this year have been to make quilts and bibs, and to send supplies to the Philippines, including money for a sewing machine and dishes and cups for the Sunday School Outreach program in Mati. We encourage you to join. Dues are $12 and are payable now. Please make checks out to "Women's Ministries" and either drop them in the offering or give them to Jody Fenlason. Thanks!
