Here's the Up and Up If you
haven't been to see the church basement lately, you will be amazed to see what
less than ten people (sometimes only 4 or 5) can do in four work parties a
week!!
The
countertops were installed last week, the new doors are being stained and
finished and trim work beginning. The project is getting closer to
completion, but there is still much to do. Remember our goal is
Thanksgiving!!
See you at
"the party"

 Operation Christmas Child Boxes
REMINDER: All Operation Christmas Child
shoeboxes need to be brought to church THIS Sunday, November 22, so they can be
taken to the distribution center that day. Please leave them on the back table
at church. Thanks! |
Highlights from the November 12 CLT Meeting- Both a 2010
Regular Operating Budget & a Special 2010 Supplemental Capital
Expense Budget recommendation from the Finance Committee were reviewed,
adjusted, and a motion passed for action to be presented to the Body at the
Annual Meeting scheduled for January 17, 2010.
- Action was
taken to accept Tina Ward, Petie Hinte, Kathy Wheaton, and Keith Wheaton as
members of the West Valley Body. They will be formally welcomed during a
regular Sunday Worship Service.
- A couple of
Motions were passed to allow the Youth to do Fund Raisers for the camp
scholarship Fund:
- Future Christmas Tree sales
- Sell surplus unused church equipment
- With regret,
but with GREAT THANKS for his many years of CLT, Board, and Head Trustee
service, Brad Neil's resignation from Stewardship Catalyst & Head
Trustee was received. But, as Brad states, I still plan to be "puttering
around" the church facilities.
- A motion was
passed to grant the request of the Latino Church to continue to use the church
facilities beyond their planned departure date of November 15 until the end of
November.
- It was also
noted that the Korean Church which has been using the West Valley facilities has
discontinued their use because of a significant reduction in their attendance.
- The week of
March 15-21, 2010 has been identified as the week that West Valley will be
providing evening meals for the "Reach Out" ministry to the homeless
in the Federal Way area. You may remember that several months ago, Willa Gaines
made a presentation during Sunday morning worship about this program. We
will be taking meals to another church where the program is located. More
details to come as we approach March.
- The Church
Sanctuary will be decorated on Sunday afternoon November 22. Help is needed, so
please contact Sandy Tonseth if you can lend a hand.

| Stafford Update
The services at Stafford Healthcare Center
continue to go well. Currently we have around 30 residents who attend each
Sunday. We would like to give each of them a Christmas present of a small
stuffed animal. If you would like to donate new or gently used ones, we're sure
they will be well-loved by the residents. There will be a box in the back of
the church where you can place the animals. Also, if you have bells you could
loan or donate, we'd like to use them for our holiday services. Those could be
put in the box with the animals, also. If you'd like your bells returned to
you, please make sure your name is on them. Thanks so much! |
A Word from Your Treasurer
When asked to write
an article for the West Valley Connection, I wasn't sure I had anything to
share. But then, I've never been totally at a loss for words.
First of all, I want
to thank everyone that turned in their Budget Requests before our Finance
Committee meeting in October. The committee met and last week
we presented the 2010 Proposed Budget to the CLT. I feel we have a
workable budget to present to you, our membership, at our Annual Congregational
Meeting to be held January 17, 2010.
Toward the end of
December or early January you will receive a copy of the 2009 Financial
Report with January - November figures and the 2010 Proposed Budget.
Please feel free to call me then - or sooner - with any questions.
I have a favor to ask
of any of you that will have reimbursements due before year end. Could
you please have your reimbursement form filled out and in my mailbox (on the
office desk) by December 20th. I would like to get as much of this year
end business finished before Christmas weekend as possible.
Thanks again to you
all and a special thanks to the Finance Committee (John, Brad, Sandy, Norm and
Keith) for your help and support.
In His Love...

From Our Pastor Emeritus, Clio Thomas
Pastor Clio Thomas serves as "Area Director" for the Asia/Pacific mission field of the Advent Christian Denomination. One of his duties is to encourage mission workers in a variety of settings throughout Asia. The following is a weekly installment of his letter, sent literally around the world to those in his charge.
Dear Ones in Christ,
For many weeks I have been writing about the Church. This is
because I believe that the Church is God's instrument for changing the
world. Without a robust view of the Church we do a disservice to the
very Gospel we are called to proclaim. Recently I have read numerous
"Statements of Faith" offered by Christian churches, denominations,
and institutions. Many of them do not even mention the Church.
Others make only a scanty reference. There are a few that give the Church
an important place. Recently in America we have seen numerous
articles written in the secular and Christian press about the decline of the
Church in the Western world. Other articles refer to the growing number
of people who say they have dropped out of the Church, or who see the
contemporary Church as irrelevant. All of this points to what appears to
be a very soft spot in Evangelical Christianity. For several decades the
emphasis of Evangelical Christianity has been on personal salvation.
Individual salvation and commitment to Jesus has been emphasized to the neglect
of discipleship and calling people to serve Him as Lord and Savior within the
Church. I don't want to be misunderstood here. We need the call to
personal commitment and faith in Jesus, but if that is as far as it goes
we are hanging people out to dry. Followers of Jesus must become a part
of the Church in order for them to grow and be effective disciples. Jesus
is the head of the Church which is His Body. One of the reasons for the
dropoff in Western Christianity is this very reason........individual commitment
has been presented to the neglect of being incorporated into the Body of
Christ. If people are taught that "all you have to do is give your
heart to Jesus", it is no wonder that they feel little need
for involvement with, or responsibility to other believers. This
kind of teaching does not make for a Church that can overcome the gates of hell
as Jesus said it would. The only kind of faith that is worth its
salt, and that glorifies Jesus, is a faith in Him that culminates in a robust
view of, and commitment to, His Church.
In the Name of Him Who is the Head of the Church,
Pastor Clio
