The Church - Jesus' Only Building Project Pastor Keith Wheaton keith@acgc.us I've been thinking a lot about the word ekklesia this week.
It's a Greek word that comes from two other Greek words meaning "called out."
You might see a connection between this word and our English word
"ecclesiastical," which means "having to do with the church."
For the next few Sundays I want to focus on the church. Just
this week I spoke with yet another person who said, "I'd go to church but it's
just too full of hypocrites." I have to admit, there are times when I wonder
why the Lord invented the church and why He continues to allow some people to
sully His name by claiming membership.
But the Lord did invent the church and it's His prescribed
means for Christians to do His ministry. Pretty much everything that we can do
that will last for eternity happens through the church. Souls are saved, spiritual
relationships are redeemed, praise and worship are offered,... through the
church.
Jesus completed His earthly ministry with a single project
left undone: building His church. This He promised to do through the ministry
of His disciples, starting with Peter and continuing to this day through us.
I used to shy away from inviting people to my church. I even
avoided saying much about it. As a pastor, I used to feel like it was kind of
self-promoting, like I was encouraging people to come hear me preach.
I don't worry about that anymore. I don't hesitate to invite
anyone to come to my church because I realize that the church is where Jesus
does His work. Whether or not I'm preaching doesn't matter. What matters is
that Jesus is at work. And the only work He promised to do here on earth was
build His church. For the next few weeks let's see how He's doing that... and how
we can make a difference for eternity through our part in His church.

ACGC Flood Relief Distribution
From the $1000 that was sent to help the AC church in Manila that suffered
tremendous loss from the recent flood, Pastor Roy was able to distribute food,
water, blankets, and cash to families. He is also reaching out to the community
in the name of Christ during this time of need. Attached are photos of (1)
keeping record of cash gifts, (2) people leaving the church with food, water,
and blankets, (3) cakes to celebrate the goodness and faithfulness of God, and
(4) an "ACGC" blanket. Pastor Roy had "ACGC" embroidered on the blankets as a
way of saying thank you and remembering you for "the warm and comfort that this ACGC
blanket may bring. THANKS ACGC!" (ACGC refers to all the Americans who are
contributing toward the relief for folks in Manila.)

Sock it to the Homeless
On Sunday Sept.
27th, we launched a sock drive to support Operation Nightwatch, a Seattle
outreach ministry to the homeless. Think about it, cold and wet Seattle in the
winter, and you have your "not very good" shoes on 24 hours a day.
Wet feet can be a miserable condition, and the gift of dry socks can be very
important. Each year Operation Nightwatch will give out up to 20,000 pairs of
socks, and so...an annual drive to collect white athletic socks: thus
"Sock it to The Homeless!"
We'll be
collecting up to Oct. 25th. Please take a few minutes when you are next
shopping to pick up a few pairs of socks, bring them with you to church and
throw them into the box in the back foyer. (The word is that there currently
are some good deals on socks at "Stupid Prices", "Fred
Meyer", "WalMart", and "Costco".)

Classifieds Deena Anderson is looking to trade her Ford F150 for a smaller vehicle, preferably a truck. It does
have more than 130,000 miles on it; however, I have not put many miles on it
myself and have taken very good care of it. Have all receipts. It has
a CD player and other fun features. Runs good.

From Our Pastor Emeritus, Clio Thomas
Pastor Clio Thomas serves as "Area Director" for the Asia/Pacific mission field of the Advent Christian Denomination. One of his duties is to encourage mission workers in a variety of settings throughout Asia. The following is a weekly installment of his letter, sent literally around the world to those in his charge.
Dear Ones in Christ,
Most of you know about Agape International Foundation, a US Non-profit
foundation developed to help fund Advent Christian Ministries worldwide. Over
the past few years some of the ministries we have helped fund are the orphanage
in Mati, Indanao, Philippines; Agape houses in Japan, Oro Bible College in
Cagayan de Oro, micro businesses in India, and Bibles and books for leaders
worldwide. Right now we have a matching gift of $10,000 US in the bank for
Global training of ministry leaders.
Some of you know that for several years I have made fruit leathers for
family and friends. I have always thought that these could be commercially
produced and sold for a profit. My prayer request is that you pray that a
contact I have at present with the Starbucks Coffee Company might provide a
possibility for fruit leather sales, the profits of which could be turned over
the Agape Foundation to help fund worldwide ministries for His glory. Within
the next two weeks I will be providing Starbucks with samples for their
consideration. Starbucks is a Seattle corporation with stores all over the
world. Thanks for your prayers. I will keep you informed. To God be the
glory!!
In case you don't know the process: Fruit leather is fruit and berries
ground up into a puree, then poured out on sheets and dehydrated. Then it is
cut into strips and packaged.....then eaten...very good stuff.
Anyway, please pray that Starbucks will help us get money for the Kingdom
of God.
With thanks and love in Him,
Pastor Clio |
