A Note of Thanks
Dear Friends,
Just a line to thank you for the picnic and the fellowship. Church friends are the very best kind and West Valley has a wonderful fellowship and a caring group. I would like to offer you some gravenstein apples, they are a wonderful cooking and eating apple-good for pies. I was a cook for many years, but being at Stafford puts the stop on that any more. My sincere best to you, hope you can find many cooks to fill your many cooking desires. Hope to see you in the near future.

Sock it to the Homeless
On Sunday Sept.
27th, we launched a sock drive to support Operation Nightwatch, a Seattle
outreach ministry to the homeless. Think about it, cold and wet Seattle in the
winter, and you have your "not very good" shoes on 24 hours a day.
Wet feet can be a miserable condition, and the gift of dry socks can be very
important. Each year Operation Nightwatch will give out up to 20,000 pairs of
socks, and so...an annual drive to collect white athletic socks: thus
"Sock it to The Homeless!"
We'll be
collecting up to Oct. 25th. Please take a few minutes when you are next
shopping to pick up a few pairs of socks, bring them with you to church and
throw them into the box in the back foyer. (The word is that there currently
are some good deals on socks at "Stupid Prices", "Fred
Meyer", "WalMart", and "Costco".)

Tom and Nelda Receive Overseas Assignment
Tom and Nelda have received their overseas assignment in Mati in the Philippines as staff assistants in Agape House Ministries. They leave for Mati this coming April and will be there for two years. They will be assisting in the children's Sunday School extension and discipling and mentoring youth.
They will be teaching various subjects at CANDOR (Christian Academy in Davao Oriental), which is a Christian vocational school. They will also be maintaining physical properties and gardening.
The people living in Mati are extremely poor by American standards. This large city is located in one of the neediest areas of the Philippine Islands. Tom and Nelda hope to touch people's lives both spiritually and physically.
"It is exciting to know where we will be living and what we will be doing for the next several years. This has been a long process for us. We first felt a call to serve in other countries nearly eight years ago. It was then that Tom began to think about pursuing a Master's degree. After deciding to attend seminary, it took him over six years to complete the degree, which he finished in August."
"Several years ago we read a book by David Dean called Don't Drink the Water. At age 70, he and his wife Dottie spent six months serving God in India. He encourages Americans to consider "tithing" their careers. If for example, a person plans to work for 40 years, Dr. Dean suggests that the person consider giving the last four years (10%) of his or her career serving needy people in the developing world. This philosophy has influenced our decision to serve overseas."
"The past year has required considerable patience waiting to learn what our job descriptions would be. We are now excited about what we have been asked to do. This will certainly be a significant change from our former careers in engineering and landscaping!"
Tom and Nelda will be working with Rowena and Irwin Cabrizos, Jan Hendrickson and others while in the Philippines.

Villa Capri News
"Hey Brad, let's play basketball." "What craft are we going to make?" "Can I have seconds on snacks?" "Where were you guys last week?"
These are some examples of questions we are asked at Kid's Club on Thursdays at Villa Capri. After a shaky beginning, the Kid's Club sponsored by West Valley is up and running. There have been many turnovers in the management at Villa Capri and we got caught in the middle of it, but hopefully this new Office Manager will work out okay. Prayer is needed for the whole complex. There are great people helping with this much-needed ministry. They are: Brad Neil, Nelda Lobb, Bruce Pleasants, Sue Pleasants, and Jody Fenlason. If you would like to spend some time with wonderful kids, please let me know.

Pastor
Keith and Kathy will be on vacation for the next two weeks. Kathy and the
children are going to visit her family in New York State, and
Keith is joining Jim Crouse and a friend to hunt elk in eastern Washington.
Since he will be in the wilderness, Keith's cell phone is unlikely to work.
In the case of an emergency, call Pastor Brandon at 253-653-5613.

| Ciao!
We just spent two days in Rome and got over our jet lag (spent time in St. Peters Basilica), then took the train to Sorrento. We had several days in Sorrento, rented a Smart car and drove the Amalfi Coast (what an experience!). Ferry to Capri (a beautiful tourist trap) today. Tomorrow we are off by train to Cortona. Pray we find the trains (that's another experience). We are safe, healthy and having a blast. See you on the 12th.
Love to you all Arrivederci! Kenny & Kathy Sent 10-6-09

From Our Pastor Emeritus, Clio Thomas
Pastor Clio Thomas serves as "Area Director" for the Asia/Pacific mission field of the Advent Christian Denomination. One of his duties is to encourage mission workers in a variety of settings throughout Asia. The following is a weekly installment of his letter, sent literally around the world to those in his charge.
Dear Ones in Christ, One of the images of the Church in the Bible is that of the "Bride". The Church is the bride of Christ. We see this several times in the Book of Revelation, and it used by Paul in Ephesians 5. In Paul's use of the image he writes of how Christ loved the Church so much that He sacrificed Himself for her. If the Church is the Bride of Christ, then those of us in the church need to think deeply about the importance of the Church and give heed to how we treat the Church. The Church is not to be taken lightly. It should never be regarded as something to be used for personal gain or a base for personal power or control. The Church of Jesus Christ needs to be regarded with the utmost honor and respect. Anything that will damage or hurt the Church will damage and hurt Jesus Christ. There is a place in the Gospels where Jesus says, "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. So watch yoursleves." (Luke 17:1-2) For Pastors and church members to be involved in causing trouble within the Church is a serious matter. The Church is His Bride and we had better be careful how we treat her. Grace and Peace to you! Love in Him, Pastor Clio
