Despite the police, Washington's
beautiful, but the Church is better! By Pastor Keith Wheaton keith@acgc.us
Today (Thursday) started with optimism. The sun shone
brightly as I stole a few hours away on my sailboat with a couple of eager
fishermen. As we pulled out of the marina the blue skies were matched by the
blue water under my bow, only to be matched by the blue lights flashing behind
us. Yes, there are police on the water and they do pull you over. I had
literally pulled out of the marina in front of Tacoma's finest, and was instantly identified
as one of society's miscreants. I'm afraid the video won't make the "Police's
Wildest Chases" TV show. The cop barely raised his voice as he asked me to put my
little six-horse motor into neutral.
Even though this is the second time I've recently written
about finding myself on the wrong side of the law, let me assure you that I'm
not a habitual offender. My crime today? Expired boat tabs. The fine:
$257.
As the officer handed the citation, he encouraged me to
plead for mitigation. "They really don't want to take your money," he said.
"It's really more about educating boaters about the laws."
What a crock! I'm plenty educated. In fact, when I bought
the boat I had to make two trips to the DMV to get the title/registration
transferred. That was in April. It seemed reasonable to assume that when one
transfers the title and registration of a boat, that boat is registered. Wrong!
The officer "educated" me to the fact that all boat registrations run out in
June. Too bad the guy at DMV hadn't made the same effort to "educate" me.
I hate to write this but you should know, Kathy's reaction
to my latest ticket wasn't as gracious as mine. "Let's move out of this stupid
state! Every time you turn around you're getting taxed or fined for something! "
she said in comforting me.
I have to agree with her assessment that Washington State
has way too many taxes, fees, regulations, rules and surprises that pick away
like a million mosquitoes, sucking the joy out of life in an otherwise
beautiful setting. What's even more discouraging is the fact that I've never
seen in my lifetime when bureaucracies and regulations didn't multiply. It's
only going to get worse. No government voluntarily decreases in size just as no
vermin voluntarily stops multiplying and spreading disease.
Thank God He doesn't run His Church like a bureaucracy! The
model of His Church is family. We're adopted as His children. There's no
application form, letters of reference, background check, drug test,
psychological assessment, or experience required.
But people like regulations. We must - we keep accepting
more and more of them. Sometimes it's hard to accept the fact that God has
chosen us to be His children and that's the end of it. We may find ourselves
looking for additional requirements. Like a jaded boater who discovers his
registration has expired (through no fault of his own!!!!) we can live in a
perpetual state of wary disbelief, just waiting for God to tack on additional
fees for our salvation.
But the three most powerful words a human ever uttered were
"It is finished." Jesus made the statement as He completed the work of our
salvation on the Cross. His sinless life and His death for our sins fulfill
every requirement God has set for us to be adopted as His children. Our only job
is to accept Jesus' work on our behalf.
There may come a day when living in Washington State
isn't worth the bother. When taxes are beyond oppressive and all the
regulations are beyond reasonable compliance. Thankfully, the Church will never
face a similar fate. God's children never have to worry about oppressive fees
or unreasonable regulations. Jesus paid it all. That's a hope that brings me
joy - even when I've got another court appearance on my schedule!

A Beautiful Day!
Beautiful blue skies greeted
the earliest to arrive at Steel
Lake Park
last Sunday. Perfect weather was an
answered prayer as our well-oiled team began preparations for our annual picnic
at 8:00 a.m.
Special thanks are due to
Neal Tripp, Brad Neal, and Ken Durkee for setting up the sound system, powered
by a generator (smartly placed 50 feet away), so the worship service could be
heard by all.
Kathy Wheaton and Kathy
Durkee did a terrific job of organizing the food and our Western themed décor .
. . special mention should be made of those who went the extra mile . . . great
boots Jean! As always at West Valley,
the food was awesome!
Following the service in which Pastor Keith admitted to some
trepidation about outdoor services
(though he was forced to admit that this day was heavenly) and a hearty meal,
Bruce and Rena Pleasants took the leadership for some great fun and games.
We were especially pleased to
see some old friends in attendance thanks to the broad distribution of our newsletter
. . . Paul and Tina Miller, Austin Warriner,
and members of his extended family, are always welcome at our table.
A great time was had by all! For those of you who missed it . . . click on
the picture below to see more photos.
Beautiful people, beautiful day, God is good!

Youth News
We
had a great end of summer youth meeting in Orting, on the Carbon River. It was our last Sunday night with no school the next day. We made food in
the fire, spent time in, and around, the river, had a great van ride, and
enjoyed the time together. Click on the picture below to see more pictures from our evening!

College

Here's the Up and Up
I have been
away for the last two weeks and WOW what a change in our basement upgrade and
update project!
The
plumbing and electrical is complete and this week the drywall is being hung!! A decision was made to have our drywall
professionals complete ALL (not just the ceiling as first planned) the mudding
and taping to speed the project along and give our volunteers a well deserved
rest. By mid next week we are hoping to be ready to paint and resume the work
parties.
The
Trustee/Design team met on Tuesday night to discuss a loose time-line and
choose paint colors. Now we really will
see progress!! After painting comes tile
floors, cabinets, bathrooms put back together, countertops, trim, trim &
more trim, carpet, doors and more trim!!
This has
been a long summer of work parties. We
are thankful for all the dedicated volunteers, especially the trustees who, for
the most part, work all day at a job and then appear for the work parties at
night and on Saturdays. The Kathy's have done a terrific job of co-coordinating
meals for the workers. Thanks to all who have willingly donated food or funds
for the meals, if you would like to help with food please call Kathy Wheaton.
Please
continue to pray for safety, energy and happy hearts for our workers!
To God be
the glory!

Women's Ministries
WOMEN: Let's get organized and moving! We want to join together for fun and ministry. Plan to be a part of Women's Ministries this year, so we can organize some interesting get-togethers and plan some ministries to our community. All women are invited to join. Dues are only $12 and go to support projects on all levels of Women's Ministries. Last year one project our local group supported was the giving of $150 toward Christmas gifts for children at Villa Capri. To join, please make checks out to Women's Ministries and give to Jody Fenlason. Thanks! |
Library Corner
By now you have all noticed the wonderul,
spacious, good looking, new book cases filled with our many library books. A
big thanks to Spencer Friedman who made them as his Eagle Scout project.
New books are in and Lori Wicks fans will enyoy A Place Called Home Series.
Another historical novel series by Kristen Heitzman is set in a Colorado mining
town and then in Sonoma California. JUNE BUG deals with a missing child
scenario. Author is Chris Fabry. A new Beverly Lewis Series has started and we
have the first book with the second on order. THE SEASONS OF GRACE is the first
book. A young readers edition of Three Cups of Tea with loads of pictures to
accompany the amazing story of Greg Mortenson who built schools for children in
Pakistan and Afghanistan is in. His 12 year old daughter Amira has had a part in
writing the book. The same story for the younger folks is told in a beautifully
illustrated book called LISTEN TO THE WIND. Another book for young children is
a true story from Africa WANGARI'S TREES OF PEACE. It shows the effort of one
woman who started a reforestation project in Kenya. She taught women to plant
seeds of peace which became a life changing method to enrich life for the
villagers.
A brand new Chronicles of Narnia series has replaced the old, dog-eared set
which has been read by many. There should be a new generation of readers of
this C.S. Lewis series and it is truly beautiful with illustrations by Pauline
Baynes. My guess is that some adults who missed the series the first time
around would enjoy it also.Newer books are on a separate shelf so come have a look.

From Our Pastor Emeritus, Clio Thomas
Good ways to avoid the swine flu
Pastor Clio Thomas serves as "Area Director" for the Asia/Pacific mission field of the Advent Christian Denomination. One of his duties is to encourage mission workers in a variety of settings throughout Asia. The following is a weekly installment of his letter, sent literally around the world to those in his charge.
Most N95 respirators are designed to filter 95% particulates of 0.3µ, while the size of H1N1 virus is about 0.1µ. Hence, dependence on N95 to protect against H1N1 is like protecting against rain with an umbrella made of mosquito net.
Tamiflu does not kill but prevents H1N1 from further proliferation till the virus limits itself in about 1-2 weeks (its natural cycle). H1N1, like other Influenza A viruses, only infects the upper respiratory tract and proliferates (only) there. The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/ throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.
While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps - not fully highlighted in most official communications - can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):
1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications) .
2. "Hands-off-the- face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).
3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.
4. Similar to 3 above, clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. Blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.
5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.
6. Drink as much of warm liquids as you can. Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.
7. DON'T GO TO WORK OR SCHOOL IF YOU HAVE ANY SYMPTONS OF FLU !
All these are simple ways to prevent, within means of most households, and certainly much less painful than to wait in long queues outside public hospitals.
Good breathing!
