The core values of West Valley Church are:
- Everyone is involved
- Music and Worship are vibrant
- Relationships are nourished
- Young Families and Youth are ministered to
Ultimately, the Church is the mechanism Jesus invented for human beings to touch eternity. It was established by Jesus so that His followers could come to faith, grow in their faith, and share this faith with those not yet saved. The Church holds us accountable and heals our wounds. The Church provides music for us to sing, and words to express our heart's desires. The Church is the magnifying glass and amplifying speaker through which we see and hear God's very words. Those readers who are detail-oriented will have noticed I capitalized the word "Church." That's because I'm not speaking just about West Valley. We are part of the Church, but we are not the only Church. In fact, I learned this week there are more than 90 Christian churches in the Federal Way area. Local churches like West Valley have different roles. Some focus on a particular ethnic group. Some focus ministry on a particular location. Some focus on a certain economic level. However, each is part of the larger Church. However, in order to be effective in ministry, it's important for a church to have some clear idea what its focus or priorities are. The cores values of West Valley serve that purpose. Everything we do should reflect at least one of these core values. Otherwise, why have them? At this point it's a fair question to ask, "What does all the church-renovation work have to do with our core values?" It would have been ludicrous for us to invest so much time an money in this project without addressing this question. While I can't speak for all the leadership of the church, let me share my answers to this question.
First, if you've been to more than one workday, you already know this project has involved many from our church family (Core Value 1). In fact, everyone is welcomed and encouraged to help. Don't minimize the value of this! Many, if not a majority, of people in a church aren't gifted to teach, lead worship, evangelize, etc. But they are gifted servants, with God-given skills, health and energy. If they can serve the Lord with a hammer, their service is no less valuable or honoring to the Lord. Our renovation enables anyone and everyone to "be involved" in the eternal work of the Church. Second, as volunteers work together on this project, relationships are nourished. The primary ingredient in building relationships is time. Renovation takes time, time together with other church members. If you don't feel like you're part of our church family, let me invite you to spend a few weeks working with us! You'll foster relationships you'll carry with you into eternity! Finally, our goal with the renovation is not a nice room and nice kitchen. Our goal is to minister to families, children, youth; to nurture spiritual relationships. We need a place for that. By making a comfortable space where we can fellowship and learn we have created a "garden-space" dedicated to a spiritual harvest. This will be one place where we always will be able to pray, study God's Word, fellowship and testify to God's goodness. In other words, this is place dedicated to activities that have eternal significance. I began this article by making the statement that "Ultimately, the Church is the mechanism Jesus invented for human beings to touch eternity." This is a theme I hope to develop in the coming weeks. No one expects our building project to result in some timeless structure to rival Rome's Coliseum. In fact, I think most of us consider it a short-term solution - we're hoping our church will quickly outgrow the facilities. However, I hope everyone considers the work to have an eternal significance. I know I do. |
A New Communion Sunday Tradition
Each Communion Sunday members are encouraged to bring one can of food for each member of their family. What a great way to ensure the food pantry is well-stocked on a regular basis! Canned goods are fine, as well as any other type of easily-prepared, non-perishable food. Let's make this a Communion Sunday tradition at WVACC! |

Thank You, Ladies!
The hospitality committee sends out a big THANK YOU to all those who've contributed meals or given donations for food for the remodeling work team. This is truly appreciated! Our work isn't done, so if you'd like to sign up to provide a meal for the work team for Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings or for lunchtime on Saturdays, please speak with Kathy W. or Kathy D. We usually have between 6-10 people here working in the evening, with a few more on Saturdays. |

Here's the Up and Up!
Who would think it would be so exciting to find a water pipe under cement? Well, just ask Bruce, who spent one evening chipping away with hammer and chisel only to discover the pipe wasn't where it should have been!! Next work party...rented jack-hammer....the elusive pipe is located in the best possible spot for our needs and we are back in business! The work parties are going well. Our trustees and volunteer work force are awesome. Brad is our can-light specialist and he has installed so many that I'm sure he is dreaming about them when he drops into bed at night!! The design team will be making some big ($$) decisions in the next week. We are still getting bids to find the right cabinets and countertops to serve our purposes and fit the budget. Please pray that the decision will be clear for us!! Thanks to everyone who is participating....this is a HUGE project and it's fun to be involved...just ask Bruce!! Sandy Tonseth CLT Chairman |

Highlights from the Recent August 13 CLT Meeting
- With regret, the CLT accepted Margaret Post's resignation as Secretary.
- The CLT voted to extend the availability of the previously approved matching funds in the Pleasants Reserve until December 31, 2009. Bruce was delayed in getting his requests for contributions started, and in the spirit of the purpose for the reserve, it was determined to allow the period for matching to extend beyond the previously established July 2009 date. No new monies have been added to the Reserve, just an extension of the availability period.
- Some years ago, a gift of stock had been given to the church which has produced dividend income to the church. The issuing company has now required that the stock be liquidated. It was voted to use those funds for repairs to the small house and to add to the remodel reserve.
- Responding to an invitation from the Willamette Conference, it was voted that West Valley would be a full participant for the Boardman, OR family camping weekend in August 2010. (pencil your 2010 calendar for that 1st week of August)
- It was voted to appoint Clio Thomas to Chair the Mission Committee for West Valley. He will replace Norm Lobb.
- Lori Ross will be putting together a task force to organize the September 13 Picnic in the Park, which will be held at Steel Lake Park this year.
- Voted to participate again this year in the Christmas Child Project, which Jody Fenlason will coordinate for West Valley.
- The Annual Meeting for West Valley will be on Sunday, November 15.
