Special Communion and Fellowship this Sunday This Sunday we will celebrate a special time of
communion and fellowship. Come prepared to share a word of encouragement during
our worship time. How has the Lord blessed you lately? Think about what He has
done in your life that could be used to strengthen your brothers' and sisters'
faith. You will be given a chance during the service.
No Sunday School this Week Due to construction, Sunday School won't offered this
week. However, we will have a time of fellowship and donuts in the back of the
sanctuary, starting around 10:00. Come and join us for a relaxing time of
informal visitation and pastries!
Mark your calendars and invite your friends! Eric Belvin, our summer worship leader intern, will present a recital August 15 from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Refreshments will follow. It promises to be an outstanding evening, with musical selections to suit a variety of tastes, including classical, broadway and Southern Gospel.
Refreshments Needed Ladies, if you can provide cookies or bars to
share following the recital on Saturday evening, August 15, please email or
speak with one of the Kathys. Punch and coffee will also be provided.

Something to look forward to... but not in Des Moines!
By Pastor Keith Wheaton [email protected]
On my drive to the office today I was thinking about the
topic for this article. I had decided that I would share how I usually have
some future commitment on my calendar that dominates my schedule. Like a
far-off mountain, this "future event" looms on my horizon, growing closer with
each passing day and giving me something to look forward to, or at least drive
towards.
For the past six months that "future event" has been the
Willamette Valley Conference Family Camp in Boardman, Oregon,
where I was the guest speaker. This commitment has been a major consideration
for me for a long time, since I was responsible for four presentations -- a
major portion of the camp's activities. It was a great camp, and I'm hoping
more from West Valley will attend next year (we had
more than 20 there this year.).
As I was driving today the thought occurred to me that I
don't have a new, "future event" dominating my calendar. That's when I glanced
in my rear-view mirror and saw a nauseating blend of red and blue lights
directly behind. Within minutes I found I had a new "future event" to dominate
my calendar. I'm not sure exactly when it is, but I know there's coming a day
in the near future when I'll be visiting the Des Moines courthouse, praying for
a judge in good mood.
(If you must know the details, I was caught - along with a
line of other cars - speeding up the hill between Redondo Beach and 272 street. The officer
indicated I was going 38 mph in a 25 mph zone. I couldn't dispute him, since I
was watching the car ahead rather than my speedometer. By the way, the car
ahead kept going, leaving me and those behind me to take the rap! In Des Moines, you can ask
for a deferment, if the ticket is a first offense and you don't have a
commercial driver's license. Unfortunately for me, I have a commercial driver's
license, so my only option is to go to court and plead "mitigating
circumstances." I think the fact that I don't have an extra $154 is a
"mitigating circumstance." I hope the judge agrees.)
Besides the "future event" of a court appearance, there is
another special occasion I'm looking forward to: the dedication of our new
fellowship hall. With the beams in place and virtually all the demolition
complete, each new workday ends with clear progress towards this goal.
I know it's just a building, and we can't measure spiritual
success by bricks and mortar. But a lot of spiritual success can't be measured
at all. We rarely see if someone is growing spiritually or living more like
Christ or witnessing more effectively. Most of these things won't be revealed
this side of eternity. So it's a nice change to have something visible that, in
some small way, represents progress in our part of Christ's Church.
So I invite you to mark you calendars. Remember to block out
the date when we will be dedicating our new fellowship hall. It will be a great
day of celebration, when we can enjoy a rare glimpse in a small, visible part
of what the Lord is doing among us. I can't give the exact date just yet, but
it will be soon. I just hope it's not on the same day that I have to go to
court! |
Communion Sunday and Canned Goods
Ed Tonseth visited his brother's
church in Ellensburg last week and was impressed by their practice of regularly
celebrating Communion Sunday by bringing a can of food for their food pantry.
Each Communion Sunday members are encouraged to bring one can of food for each
member of their family. What a great way to ensure the food pantry is
well-stocked on a regular basis! So, if it's not too late for you, let me
encourage you to come this Sunday with an item for our food pantry. Canned
goods are fine, as well as any other type of easily-prepared, non-perishable
food. Let's make this a Communion Sunday tradition at WVACC! |

Fun at Boardman Family Camp
During his time at Boardman Family Camp, Pastor Keith
made friends with the local wildlife. Unfortunately, the wildlife was pretty
fickle!

Here's the Up and Up!
The work parties are back to regular schedule this week; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 5:00 to 8:00 beginning with dinner, and Saturday 9:30 to 3:00 with lunch included!! Come and join in the fun of upgrading and updating our basement; we have jobs for all skill levels!! Very soon we will be seeing the rooms take shape. Now that the beams are complete and the old framing down, it is much easier to visualize our new space with great natural light. The next couple of weeks will be a time for wiring and plumbing before the drywall goes back up. We are still fine tuning the kitchen layout and getting bids for cabinets and countertops. We are well within the budget and still hoping to be complete be early fall. Thank you for supporting this project in so many ways; encouragement, crew meals, and most of all your prayer support!! If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments, please direct them to Ken Durkee, Sandy Tonseth or Pastor Keith. If you can provide a crew meal, please contact Kathy Wheaton.
