Is it Labor Day yet?
Get the white out of you wardrobe and back into storage; there is a scant 2 weeks left to wear it (Yes, I do believe that there is no white after Labor Day unless, of course, its winter white which is a whole different matter). Plan that last trip to the beach, Legoland and Disneyland and sniff September in the air. Smell the new school year. There are plans to be made and work to be done. We need to figure out how to survive in the new paradigm.
It's been a feast or famine summer; folks are either working their bottom's off or just sitting on them watching the kind of TV that they like to complain about (that would be unscripted, shot on digital formats). I, for one, enjoy the Real Housewives and appreciate the fact that lots of gear gets rented and lots of folks get to work and earn a living.
September always makes me a little sad. This likely harkens back to the days when September meant the end of the freedom of summer and the dread of beginning of a new school year. The unknown is so... unknown.
Our business is changing.Used to be quality ruled, however, quality is subjective. Sometimes, good enough is good enough. Competent filmmakers are succeeding with systems that capture, edit, sweeten and color correct for less than your credit card limit.
TV stations are employing "backpack journalists" who can report, write, shoot and edit - and who never leave home without their flip cameras.
Since less is the new more and digital is the new less; we are embracing our digital family of products and selling off some of our 35mm film camera fleet. Sigh.
Prices range from under $7K for an Arri 35IIC package to over $47K for SR3 Advanced packages. If you've always wanted to own a piece of history, now may be the time to do it. Darwin said that those who survive are those who best adapt. I'm just sayin'.
