Why Does My Shoulder Hurt?
Greetings!

Do you work at a desk all day and find that your body aches in places you never knew could just by sitting around?  Does it usually resonate from your spine and neck?

Think about your spine as the building blocks of the entire body.  As you sit in certain positions, the spine becomes out of line.  This is natural.  Now if you keep the position consistently throughout the day, day after day, month after month,  eventually, other parts of your body will feel it and you will experience pain.

Ergonomics is the science of designing the job, equipment, and workplace to fit the worker. Proper ergonomic design is necessary to prevent repetitive strain injuries which can develop over time and can lead to long-term disability.

Visit the Ergonomics link below to see what Daniel Seidler, MSPT and Perry Bonomo, MAPT have to say about battling and winning over worksite pain.

Your Spine

Common areas where you will feel pain are the upper, mid, and lower back, neck, shoulders, and wrists.  Sitting at a desk is something many workers cannot avoid, especially if it is in the job description.  In this day's economy, it is not so easy to decline a job opportunity on the basis that it limits physical activity.

One will just have to ease into a daily at-your-desk fitness routine to avoid pain.

If you keep your spine in good alignment, you can avoid the inevitable worksite pain working at a desk all day brings.  The picture on the right displays the parts of your spine.  Each individual part has a distinct shape for specific reasons.  The discs, if lined up nicely, will distribute the weight of your body appropriately so it does not overflow to other parts of the body- the neck, shoulders, wrists or back.
At-Your-Desk Relief
It's all About the Chair!
While at the desk, keep your chin up and your back straight when you feel achy. To decrease low back aches, adjust your chair to be able to plant both feet firmly on the ground. This will widen your base of support therefore takes pressure off the back and buttocks. The weight will be evenly distributed to your feet therefore relieving tension in the lower back.
Use your armrests to align your shoulders correctly as you type all day and use the wrist supports at the base of your keyboard so your wrist maintains a neutral position.  Eyes must be at the level of your monitor to avoid neck strains.  Once your chair is set up properly, your body will thank you!
Back Pain in the Morning?
Or Prevent Back Pain Before it Happens
Many people complain of back pain especially when first waking up. One reason is that your discs are fluid-filled sacs between the vertebrae in your spine. They tend to refill with fluid when you're lying down. This additional fluid increases the pressure on your back and causes discomfort. Gentle therapeutic exercise in the morning tend to mobilize the fluid and relieve the pain. 1. Bridging: Lay on your back and with your feet planted on the bed and knees bent. Lift your pelvis off the bed and hold for a few seconds. 2. Bring your knees to chest and squeeze for a few seconds. Do these a few times before getting out of bed. It may not work for all body types and health conditions so please use your judgement.
