WIC Spec NEWS LETTER   -  Catch up on all that your Chapter is doing!
March 2012 Issue

KIRA PIC

Hello NAWIC Ladies,

The Denver #112 NAWIC Chapter had a great February and is gearing up for a terrific March with a lot going on! Last month we had Pauline Bargell come back to speak to our ladies about  generations in the workplace and how the new wave of technology is effecting our business structures and ways we communicate. It was eye opening to think that in less than 10 years offices as we know them may not exist due to the advances in portable technology!

This month we are so very excited for WIC Week, March 4th- 10th. Alice Sanchez has done a fantastic job as the WIC Week chair and her committee with putting a great schedule together. March 5th is our "Gear up for WIC Week" day were we sent out  flyers and informative emails about what WIC Week is all about and the great events we had planned. March 6th we did a NAWIC promotional memo out to over 300+ contacts to help get the word out about women in construction and NAWIC to try to recruit new members to our really terrific chapter. March 7th we received a NAWIC proclamation from the Mayor of Denver Mr. Michael B. Hancock at 1:30pm in Downtown Denver at the Mayor's office. We got to meet the Mayor and speak to him about our organization and drew awareness to women in our industry. March 8th the WIC Week committee sent out a Fun Facts NAWIC Flyer which helped spread the word about this great group of ladies and continues to educate our current group about all that NAWIC has done in the past and provides for them now.  Friday March 9th was our "Sport NAWIC to Work Day" where we had asked all our members to wear the WIC Week pins that we provided to them at the February meeting and post the WIC Week posters in their offices and job sites. We were most excited, however, for March 10th as the past national president, Deb Gregoire, came to speak to our entire membership and their guests at our Come-1 Bring -1 NAWIC promotional event about the powers of great communication. We were also very excited to have Linda Kofford, our Region 8 Director, and the Colorado Springs Chapter joining us that Saturday as well!

April will be another fantastic month for our chapter as we will be having Deacon Taylor coming to present on "Becoming Educated on Building Science and Performance". This topic is a different look at the concepts and methods of building "Green".

May is always by far our biggest month, as a chapter, because not only do we attend Forum, May 3rd-5th in Tucson, AZ., but we also have our largest fundraiser of the year that helps us provide continuing educational programs for our members but also three to four $1,000 scholarships to help high school and current college students pursue their dreams and educational goals in the construction industry. We begin the scholarship program in March and award the winners every year at our big Denver NAWIC Fashion Show & Silent Auction that this year will be held on Friday May 11th at 5:30pm-10pm at the terrific Copper Fields Chateau Event Center. This year we plan to have 225 people in attendance and promise it will be nothing short of an extravagant event! Tickets are available for $45 each and $80 for couples which includes a full sit down dinner and the live fashion show that Katrina Bochy and her Ways & Means Committee has put on the past two years. Please visit our website and view the invitation at www.nawicdenver.org

June the P&E committee has one of our own Denver members, Carrie Rogers, speaking to the membership on "Marketing Yourself as a Women in Construction" which many of us have been looking forward to all year!

2011 NAWIC Scholarship Winner - Taylor Hutton

HUTTON

"I want to thank all the NAWIC ladies for the $1,000 scholarship. My first semester of college at CSU was a very good eye opener for me. I challenged myself into taking 16 credits along with participating in softball here at Colorado State University. I am pleased with what I have learned from my first semester of college and I am using that knowledge to better my education and use my resources to my advantage for future semesters and classes. The NAWIC scholarship has helped me by allowing me to take my introduction class into Construction Management. I have learned so much in that class and I was able to attend site tours and learn about the many different career opportunities I can pursue in Construction Management. Thank you again for choosing me as one of your scholarship recipients. It has truly helped me by leading me in the right direction

NAWIC SPOT LIGHT ON YOU!

  March Spotlight - Jen Stein

jen stein

March - This month our Spotlight is on Jen Stein.

Jen is currently working for the City and County of Denver at the Denver International Airport as a Project Controls Scheduler. She's been with her current company for 1 ½ years. Her favorite aspect of her job is the wide variety of projects that they have at any time, DIA is like a small city of its own.

Jen attended Colorado State University with a major in Construction Management. She originally started out in Engineering and decided that the field didn't match her personality type. She's always been a planner and loves to solve problems so Construction Management was a much better fit. It brought everything that she liked to learn about and was good at together.

Jen recently joined our Chapter this year but had attended a few meetings before joining. She joined NAWIC to be around other women in the industry that she could learn from. It's important for her to keep learning and growing in her career. Jen likes the different speaker topics at the meetings and the opportunity from learn from other ladies in the Chapter. The outreach opportunities are also something she is excited about.

WIC WEEK  March 4th - 10th

"We had a terrific WIC Week ladies! WIC  Week is special for us ladies in the industry. It is a time for us to all raise awareness of the roles women play in construction and all that our Association has to offer! We use WIC Week to educate the public, promote careers in the industry, and make positive contributions to our communities. Monday we kicked off WIC Week with a "Gear-Up for WIC Week" email blast that altered over 300+ contacts of all the events our chapter had planned for the WIC Week. Tuesday we sent out NAWIC brochures to you all and asked that you pass them along to your contacts to help spread the word about all the opportunities that are available to students and working professionals in the construction industry. Wednesday wehad the wonderful opportunity met with Denver's Mayor Michael B. Hancock who presented our chapter with a proclamation in recognition of our organization, our chapter and WIC Week! Thursday we sent out a Flyer with facts about NAWIC and WIC with the hopes to bring awareness about women in the industry. Friday was our Sport NAWIC to Work day where everyone wore their NAWIC WIC Week pins and posted the NAWIC WIC Week posters in their offices and job sites.

Saturday was our big Come1 & Bring 1 event which had the largest turn out of the year so far with almost 30 ladies coming to hear our past National President, Deb Gregoire, present on the Powers of Communication. What a terrific event it was!

Congratulations ladies on such a hugely successful WIC Week and a big thank you to Amy Powell, Alice Sanchez and her committee for putting together such a successful event!

 GROW WITH GALS -
Girls Recognizing Outstanding Women

"Ladies, we have been contacted by a local organization called Girls Athletic Leadership School (GALS) in Denver and they have invited us to participate in their program called Girls Recognizing Outstanding Women (GROW) on Saturday May 19th, 2012 10:30-3:30pm at is 200 S. University Blvd., Denver 80209. GROW's mission is to empower girls to be the leaders of the future and focus on leadership and service in the community.

Their organization has recognized our NAWIC Chapter's contributions to the community and has invited us to have a table at their event where we will be handing out information about NAWIC and speaking to 200-300 young girls' ages 10 to 15 about careers and future opportunities for young women in the construction industry. The events program will also consist of panel discussions, workshops, a keynote speaker and performers as well! You check out their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/GROWwithGALS

This is a great opportunity to reach out to young ladies who are looking for advice and guidance as they plan their visions and goals for the future!

If you are interested in attending the event, please let me know no later than April 27th. We would love to have as many of us there as possible as there will be a lot of girls to talk to you! You can stay the entire time or just a part of it. Whatever works for your schedule."
