WIC Spec NEWS LETTER   -  Catch up on all that your Chapter is doing!
February 2012 Issue
KIRA PIC

The Denver #112 NAWIC Denver Chapter is so excited for a terrific February!  Last month we had Becky Kusick come and speak to our ladies about how to better handle stress and how you can learn your personal signs for stress to bettter manage it before it begins to affect you physically and emotionally.

This month our group will be meeting at the Breckenridge Brewery to hear Pauline  Bargell present on "Generations in the Workplace".  Our VP, Amy Powell did a great job of getting Pauline back to speak to our chapter.  This was a topic that we also did last year and members who attended it have requesed we schedule it again, because of the informative information and benefit they received from this previously. This was a wonderful topic and relevant for every single one of us!

March being WIC Week is huge for our Denver Chapter.  Alice Sanchez has done a fantastic job as the WIC Week chair and her committe with Katrina Bocky and Katherine Vos of putting a great schedule together!  March 5th we will besending out an agenda for WIC week events and doing vlunteer work in our local community with a food drive.  March 6th we will be donating food to a local mission. March 7th we will be receiving a NAWIC Proclamation from the Mayor of Denver, Mr. Michael B. Hancock.   March 8th the WIC Week committee will be sending out a Fun Facts about NAWIC Flyer.  March 9th is our "Sport NAWIC to Work Day".and then March 10th we are VERY excited to have past National President, Deb Gregoire, coming to speak to our entire membership at a "Come -1, Bring -1" event!

April is another fantastic month for our chapter as we will be having Decon Taylor coming to present on "Becoming Educated on Building Science and Performance" followed by our always successful and fun Ways and Means
Silent Aucion and Fashion Show tentatively scheduled for the evening of Friday, May 12th.  So, definitely stay tuned for more details!  June the P&E Committee has one of our own Denver members, Carrie Rogers, speaking to the membership on "Marketing Yourself as a Women in Construction" which many of us have been looking forward to all year!

As always, feel free to check out the new chapter website for all the latest and greatest going on in the Denver NAWIC Chapter!  www.nawicdenver.org

2011 NAWIC Scholarship Winner

 Chelsea Strang

 chelsea strang

Last year Chelsea Strang won one of our Denver NAWIC Vona J. Wagner Memorial Scholarships for $1,000. We have caught up with Chelsea who is now beginning her second semester at CSU - Fort Collins to see how her first semester in college has gone.

If you know of any students interested in one of our three $1,000 scholarships, please have them either contact Alice Sanchez, Scholarship Committee chair, at asanchez@RMDTLLC.net or go to the scholarship committee web page at http://nawicdenver.org//committees/scholarship-pr.htm for more details. All scholarship applications are due April 20th.

Hey y'all! My name is Chelsea Strang.  I am currently attending my second semester at Colorado State University in the construction management program.  I decided construction management at an early age when my mom became an architect.  I have always loved the industry but decided I couldn't sit behind a desk all day like my mom, and I like being in charge of projects, so that is where construction management came into play.

During my first semester, I took my first construction class which was Intro to Construction Management.  This class went over the basics of construction including job positions, materials used, type of construction, etc.  Luckily, I was put into a class that was fairly advanced and had worked in the construction industry more, so we got into a lot more detail, and challenged ourselves a little bit more then the other classes.  I feel very prepared to continue on with construction classes now that I have taken that class.  A couple other classes I have taken include CAD I and II, as well as Materials and Methods.  Taking CAD helped me learn what it takes to design a project and also what happens during the design phase.  Materials and Methods has helped me prepare for the industry as I now know what materials are used, since before this class I wouldn't have known half of the materials and their meanings.  Although I have taken the basic classes, there is still so much more to learn!

My future goals include graduating with a bachelor degree in construction management in two and a half years, and starting my career in the construction industry with Hensel Phelps Construction Company as a project manager, where I currently work as a part time employee in the estimating department.  I have learned a lot from this department in regards to the estimating process and what happens before the project goes into the construction phase.  I like the fact that I am able to learn every phase of the industry instead of just the construction phase because it is all useful information in the field if you know how the building was designed and how much each material cost.

I thank the Denver NAWIC chapter #112 as they have helped me go to college by awarding me a $1,000.00 scholarship.  I hope to join the NAWIC chapter during my second year of college, and hopefully be a part of NAWIC after college, since I am a big promoter of women in construction. After all we are the minority in the industry.  So, thank you NAWIC ladies for the scholarship that is allowing me to continue my schooling and further my education to help me become a successful woman in the Construction Industry.

"This month the membership committee selected Barb Kuettel as the second quarter spirit award recipient. Barb has participated and volunteering in the chapter for several years and just this year became a member. Since then Barb has helped to support the efforts of Block Kids and donated her time during the month of December to help stuff stockings at the Christmas party for the Foster and Adoptive Families of Larimer County. Barb has been such a huge supporter of this chapter over the past few years and truly encompasses the spirit of NAWIC through her enthusiasm for the Denver Chapter and our members.  Barb always has a smile on her face and is always willing to help out. Because of that please helps us congratulate Barb Kuettel and thank her for all of her help and support. We look forward to seeing Barb continue her growth and involvement in NAWIC."

Block Kids

The Block Kids Competition was held on February 2nd at Mission Viejo Elementary School in Aurora.  The students were so excited that the competition was held at their school this year.  We had a lot of very creative kids participating.  It was a tough decision for the judges.   We had 47 -  4th and 5th grade students participating consisting of 27 boys and 20 girls.  Our 1st place winner was a 4th grade girl Anh Nguyen.  She built a Solar Bamboo Retail Center.   Our 2nd place winner was a 5th grade boy Andrew Lopez.  He built a Construction Crane.  Our 3rd place winner was a 4th grade boy Neil Cook.  He built a Demolition Catapult.  We presented our top 3 winner with gift certificates.  Even though we could only pick 3 winners all the kids who participated received a goodie bag.  It was a wonderful event with a lot of happy kids.

I would like to say thank you to a few people to whom without them this event would not have been possible.  First I would like to say thank you to Mr. Pearson's the Principal at Mission Viejo Elementary for allowing us to hold the event at his school.  Thanks to all our wonderful sponsors for their generous donations and support to this event.   To the outstanding crew of judges.  Thanks so much for taking the time to come and help out.  Last but not least to my committee Catherine Vos and Dawn Homa.  I couldn't have done it with out you ladies.
