WIC Spec NEWS LETTER   -  Catch up on all that your Chapter is doing!
January 2012 Issue
KIRA PIC
Happy New Year NAWIC Ladies,

The Denver #112 NAWIC Chapter is gearing up for a BIG year and we are so excited!

In December we volunteered at the Women's Bean Project selling bean soups and baskets to help raise funds for their organization which has been around since 1989 helping women to break the cycle of poverty and unemployment through teaching the women job readiness and life skills for entry-level jobs through employment in their gourmet food production and handmade jewelry manufacturing business. Our chapter ran on booth on December 5th & 6th and also was able to Promote NAWIC and share information about our great NAWIC programs for women!

Also in December on the 17th we volunteered for the Foster and Adoptive Families of Larimer County helping to stuff goody bags and wrap gifts for the families and kids in need. Our chapter also volunteered at their Christmas party and was able to see all the excited kids open their gifts and the very grateful families for everyone generosity. This is such a rewarding experience!

We have so many great events coming up this year such as January 12th we will have Becky Kusick coming to discuss how to balance and manage stress to our members, the always terrific Block Kids event on February 2nd at the Gold Crown Field House, February 9th Pauline Bargell will be speaking to our members about the different generations on the workplace which was a huge hit last year! We are VERY excited for WIC Week which we will be volunteering for a day with Habitat for Humanity with their Women Who Build program, Sport NAWIC to Work, a proclamation from our City of Denver Mayor, a membership Drive on Thursday March 8th, NAWIC "Did You Know - Fun Facts" and we are most excited for past national president Debbie Gregoire coming to visit our chapter on March 10th to speak to members about all the great opportunities NAWIC officers and the importance of great communication to be successful.

In April we will have Deacon Taylor coming to speak to our members about becoming educated on building science and sustainability and on May 11th we will be hosting are always fun and exciting Ways & Means Silent Auction and Fashion show! So please stay tuned for more details as this is our largest fundraiser of the year and can't be missed. In June Carrie Rogers, one of our newest chapter members will speak to our group about being successful on marketing yourself as a woman in construction. We are currently planning a July 14th membership drive event pairing with Women on Course for a Wine & 9 golf event that should be really fun! To round out the year in August on the 14th we will be celebrating our chapter's 48th anniversary and September 8th we will be hosting our second fundraiser of the year which is our wine tasting and food pairing event.

We hope to see you all there!

January Spotlight - Chapter President, Kira Caffee

Kira is currently working with Holland Partners Group as an Associate Project Manager. One of Kira's favorite aspects of her job is "working as part of a project team and being able to see all the hard work we do behind the scenes to make the projects run actually then get built and see how happy our end users are with the building and spaces." A good lead for Kira would be information on any commercial, retail or multi-family projects or contractors.

Kira had an idea that she'd want to be a part of the construction industry early in her career, she attended CSU in Fort Collins and Majored in Interior Design with a minor in Construction Management. After taking a few construction management classes she'd found her calling and began immediately working in the industry.

As a NAWIC member for the last 4 years she has been quite busy. In that time she has held the position of Secretary, Vice President and now President and has "loved every minute of it!" One of her favorite things about NAWIC is all of the great women that she has the opportunity to meet through the organization. The comraderie of the group is what she really looks forward to as well as the amazing capabilities of what our members can accomplish when they unite and the way that everyone works together to help a member in need.

When asked who her biggest inspiration in life has been she said that it was hard to single just one person out. Her parents helped her to develop great qualities like being confident and goal driven while some very close friends have helped to inspire her to always dream bid and achieve whatever goals she's set for herself.

Here are a few fun facts about Kira:

Favorite vacation spot. Rome & Como, Italy

Dream Job - teacher at a University

"Guilty pleasure" song - Dancing Queen by ABBA

Do you ever count your steps when you walk? Yes, especially when I'm walking up or down stairs in heals. It somehow helps me focus on not tripping.

Would you rather be attacked by a big bear or a swarm of bees? Ouch, maybe bees because I might have a chance to out run them to the nearest pool of water?

Do you ever dance even if there is no music playing? Absolutely! I always throw on a pair of heels and dance while I vacuum the house. It makes the chore of cleaning WAY more fun

.

Were you ever a girl scout? I was a girl scout at St. Mary's through 8th grade. I made it all the way to a junior.

Do you dance in the car? Especially in traffic. It helps to ease my road rage

Favorite movie of all time? Breakfast at Tiffany's

If someone wrote a book about your life what would they title it? Stiletto's and a Dream

Would you rather have super strength or super intelligence? I definitely would go with super intelligence. I love debating and having philosophical discussions with my friends.

At a movie theatre which arm rest is yours? Both!  I love to get a ton of candy and popcorn and pick through them all through the movie.

Want to be a NAWIC TV Star?

If you don't know already, the 2012 Annual NAWIC National Convention is being held here in Denver this year and the National Convention Committee would like our chapter to participate in their promotional video that will go out to all the chapters! The National Convention Committee will be in town February 24th -26th 2012 and will be shooting their video that weekend. The committee would like us to first provide them with a list of "Don't Miss Denver Hot Spots" here in Denver and then the weekend of February 24th-26th they would like us to help participate and star in the video!

If you know of places in the Denver Metro area that you would suggest to anyone who comes to Denver please send me the name, why it is a "don't miss Denver hot spot", the address and phone number. These ideas can be anything like parks, theaters, restaurants, museums, etc.

Then, if you would like to participate in the video or would just like to come spend some time hanging out with other NAWIC ladies please send me your name and mark your calendar! As the date gets closer I will send you more details.

I need to get all the "Don't Miss Denver Hot Spots" by January 31st.

This is our chapter's opportunity to shine and show why our chapter is the best. So let's give it our all and really show the rest of the chapter's why they just can't miss out on coming to Denver!
