NAWIC LOGO 2011-2012

WIC Spec NEWS LETTER   -  Catch up on all that your Chapter is doing!
October 2011 Issue
KIRA PIC

Hello Wonderful NAWIC Ladies,

We are so excited for this upcoming year and all that our chapter has planned! We have also made some exciting changes for our chapter this year that we would like to share with you. First ,I would like to begin by saying thank you on behalf of your standing officers, board of directors and myself for electing us to serve you this year. We started planning for this year back in June where we spent time really reviewing all the feed back we received from you through the end of year survey and your comments that all of you have been emailing us with. The vision and goal for this year is to break down the barriers that we all face in this difficult market and build our selves and careers to new heights with greater success.

The first change we have made this year address many of your concerns about the website. You spoke and we listened! The new website is more user friendly and contains a ton of information about what our chapter is doing and the events we are planning. Along with that, we have also included links to all the other chapter's websites in our region, NEF, and NAWIC National so that you have all the information you could want right at your finger tips! The website also contains an interactive calendar that has all the meetings, events and volunteer opportunities throughout the entire year. If you are interested in just a specific committee's events and upcoming opportunities, well we have that information too! So please check it out and as always we welcome any feedback or comments that you may have.

Back in June we had a very lengthy discussion at the strategic planning meeting about how to strengthen our committees and really use our resources to the best of our ability to better serve you. From that discussion we have re-organized our committee structure and I am very excited to tell you about them. Our new committees their chairs are:

Construction Professional & Education Committee - Chair: Vice President Amy Powell

NEF & CAD Committee - Chair: Secretary Veronica Dutczak

Finance Committee - Chair: Treasurer Erin Smith

PR & Scholarship Committee - Chair: Director Alice Sanchez

Membership & Nominating Committee - Chair: Director Julie Griffin

Sponsorship & Marketing Committee - Chair: Director Dawn Home

Ways & Means Committee - Chair: Director Katrina Bochy

Please mark you calendars for Oct. 13th to hear about all the great events each of these committees has planned for this year and get your chance to sign up!

One other change that you may have already noticed is the incorporation of the new Denver NAWIC logo. This logo was approved by national and voted on by you at the July membership meeting. Well we are putting it to work! This new logo will help us better promote our chapter to new prospective members and take this chapter into the 21st century. We would like to ask all of our members to add it to their email title blocks. This will better spread the word of NAWIC one email at a time. If you would like a copy of the log, please contact me.

This past month we have had two great events. Back on Sept. 8th we were blessed to have our Region 8 Director, Linda Kofford, come and present with your Vice President Amy Powell, on how to best make NAWIC do the work for you. This presentation held a lot of great information on how to use the resources and educational opportunities that NEF and NAWIC provide to you and your company. Opportunities such as getting your certification in Construction Bookkeeping, Business Analysis, Industry Technician, Construction Principles, Labor Relations, Working Drawings, Project Manuals, and much much more!

Back on Sept. 1st myself, Amy Powell, Alice Sanchez and Veronica Dutczak went to National Convention in St. Louis, MO. to represent you at the largest event that NAWIC has. We were able to raise over $300 for the CAD and Membership committee by selling our chapters jewelry and decals. Please take a moment to read our convention reports as we would like to share some of the great information that we learned about time management, the FUNdamentals of success, How to work between the generations, and How to walk, talk and negotiate like a CEO. So don't miss out!

We are so very excited for this upcoming year and can't wait to get it started! So please mark you calendars for Oct. 13th and if you are interested in sitting in on the board meetings please feel free to join us Oct. 4th at The Weitz Company offices at 6pm. For more information about these meetings or any other upcoming meetings, events and volunteer opportunities please check out our calendar.

As always, if you every have any questions or comments that you would like to share with me or your board, please don't hesitate to call or email me as we are all here to help and support each other as we strive to break down barriers and build to new heights!

She has inspired countless lives over the years and continues to do so. We are honored to present our first Spirit award to Hazel Bolsover. Installation Brunch 2011-2012
September 10th

 INSTALLATION2

We had a terrific installation brunch hosted by Veronica Dutczak and her family.

We were excited to have Linda Champlin-Frank from the Colorado Springs Chapter as our installation officer.

The theme for this year is breaking down barriers and building to new heights. In order to start building our chapter to greater success we must have all the right tools in our tool belt to begin with. I firmly believe that this year we have the perfect team to accomplish success.

Every tool belt needs a variety of tools that can perform specific tasks. This year Amy Powell will be our Vice President and utility knife. She is sharp and has a good grip on what all of our members want and need. Amy is a great listener and is very precise in everything that she does. Amy will be serving this chapter and providing great networking and training opportunities in order to help build our members personal skills and knowledge in the construction industry. Amy is a project manager and a terrific time manger which is perfect attributes for a Vice President.

This chapter will also need a treasurer who is great with number and can measure all of our feet and inches as we build towards success. Erin Smith will be a terrific treasurer and "tape measure" in our tool belt. Erin will be keeping all financial records in order to help us make wise financial decisions this coming year. Erin is a licensed CPA and an amazing multi-tasker which makes her more than the optimal lady of the position of treasurer. Erin will serve this chapter by collecting and tracking all the financial business of the great meetings, events, and exciting fundraisers that are planned for this year.

Every great tool belt needs a tough and sturdy screw driver. This year Veronica Dutczak will be serving as the secretary and will be keeping all the minutes and goings on this year. Veronica will be in charge of keeping all of our "nuts & bolts" organized. This chapter will rely on her to keep this chapter square and tight with all record business of this chapter. Veronica is an AIA architect who has a very keen eye for detail which makes her the exact tool that our chapter needs to be successful this year.

This chapter is very lucky to have a tool in its tool box that has a creative touch to help with all the sponsorship and marketing endeavors.

Dawn Homa will be serving this chapter as director and committee chair for the Sponsorship & Marketing committee. Dawn will be our creative paint brush this year. Dawn will be in charge of painting bright colors of NAWIC in our newsletter and all PR material that will be used to keep our members in the know and spread the word of what a great organization NAWIC is. Dawn is the perfect paint brush with her creative eye and experience as a business owner for a creative sign company.

The next tool in our construction tool belt is a necessity to every great chapter. A rake/cultivator is a tool that nurtures growth and creates an environment where every flower can grow and prosper.  Julie Griffin will be serving this chapter as director and the chair for the Membership & Nominating committee. Julie is the perfect lady to provide "fertile soils" for our members and be the outreach for new members. Julie is an account manager with the perfect outgoing and sunny disposition that will serve this chapter perfectly because of that.

Every year this chapter put s on two to three hugely successful scholarship fundraising events. These events are large tasks to undertake and can be a lot to juggle. Katrina Bochy will be serving this as director and committee chair for the Ways & Means committee. Katrina is an expert at multi-tasking, sponsorship raising and a personality that is contagiously exciting which makes her perfect for Ways & Means! With all that this committee does in a year Katrina will need a tool that will help keep the balls rolling and organized. Katrina is a perfect representation of a strong tool apron that keeps everything neat and tidy when many tasks are in play. Katrina is an operations manger so she is very use to all managing all the goings on that the Ways & Means committee has planed for this year.

This chapter needs a person who can get down to business and spread the word of NAWIC to our new and current industry ladies. Alice Sanchez will be serving this chapter as director and committee chair of the PR & Scholarship committee. Alice has all the skills and know how to give Block Kids and WIC Week all the pizzas and direction that it needs to be one of our largest success. Alice will be the perfect utility gloves for our tool belt as she currently is a  director of business development so she is use to getting involved and building strong teams.

Last but certainly not least, this chapter will need a guiding light. A person who knows NAWIC inside and out and can shed light as we break down barriers and build to new heights. Hazel Bolsover will be serving this board and chapter as the parliamentarian and our tool belts flash light. Hazel has sat as past president for this chapter and past Region 8 Director so we couldn't have a more perfect guiding light than Hazel.

At the 56th annual NAWIC Convention in St. Louis this August, Ruth Williams spoke about Time Management and Achieving Your Highest  Priorities. She shared her Franklin Covey training and her personal experience managing her family responsibilities for her16 children, 8 grandchildren and her husband. Her suggestions included:

  • Tracking what's important  - your "WIGS" or Wildly Important Goals
  • The "T.A.F." planning secret  or Time Activating Forward
  • Tracking even the minor details and notes
  • Planning daily for 5-10 minutes daily and planning weekly for the next two weeks
  • Using a Time Matrix; What's Urgent & important, non-urgent & important, urgent & not important and non-urgent and not important
  • Prioritizing by importance and value to you
  • Planning both personal & business events & reminders into your schedule
  • Being happy at home equates to being happy at work
  • Repeating a behavior for 21 consecutive days for it to become a habit
  • Planning only 65% of your time with tasks & appointments and reserving time for interruptions (If you don't get all your tasks done, you need to reserve more time for interruptions)
  • Writing in present tense
  • Thinking of ALL your key roles when scheduling: Project Manager, Mom, Wife, NAWIC member, whatever your roles may be
  • Identifying the activities that will make you successful at your current roles (such as being known to remember birthdays, or what ever applies to your role)
  • Scheduling all activities that will take care of YOU such as exercising, sleep & time to call friends
  • Using writing symbols to track the status of "to do's" when scheduling

Ruth says that with these and other suggestions, your life should be less stressful, more productive & balanced and more fun.  She is proof it works!

Dear _____________:

As the national director for Region 8 of the National Association of Women in Construction I want to personally thank you for the support of the (name) Chapter and (member name).   It is important to have the support of member firms as we pursue our goal "to enhance the success of women in the construction industry".

The Region will be hosting the Annual Planning Conference in Scottsdale, Arizona on October 21st and 22nd. This conference will offer members an opportunity to enrich their professional and personal lives through networking and participation in seminars.

In particular this year, the kickoff event on Friday afternoon is designed to teach the dynamics of team building including: concepts, skills and values.  The skills that are developed during the team building activity are those than can be share with others in your firm.  This part of the conference offers individuals opportunities to embrace new ideas and ideals by being part of the team.  The concepts of teamwork and effective leadership take on new importance to the participants.  In addition to team building, our attendees will also participate in a workshop on strategic planning and learn more about the educational programs offered by NAWIC Education Foundation.

Our guest speaker on Saturday is Otto Siegel, M.Ed., MC of Genius Coaching.  Mr. Siegel believes that in order to be a good leader you need to know your personal strengths and weaknesses, understand how to choose the right team, develop skills to work with difficult people and manage your team by maximizing individual performance.  This seminar alone is worth the registration fee for the conference.

Thank you again for supporting NAWIC and I will look forward to seeing (name) in Scottsdale.

Sincerely,

Linda Kofford
