New Green Bike Lanes Increase Driver Awareness
Bike lanes along Main Street between Telephone Road and Mills Road have been painted solid green (and dashed) at turning and merging points where cyclists are most likely to mix with heavy auto traffic. The bright green lanes make bicyclists more visible to ensure safety.
Drivers should treat these as normal bike lanes, as the rules of the road are the same: motorists may not drive in the bike lane except to park, to enter or exit a driveway, or to prepare for a turn within 200 feet of an intersection.
In addition to the green bike lanes, motorists will see a new two-stage bike box at Main Street and Telephone Road. The box allows bikes to gather in a protected area while waiting for the traffic signal to turn green, and offers bicyclists a safe way to make left turns at multi-lane signalized intersections from a right side bike lane. This is an alternative option for bicyclists but not a required route. Cyclists may still make use of the standard left lane for turns.

DUI Checkpoint Aims to Keep Roads Safe
The Ventura Police Department (VPD) will conduct a DUI/Driver's License Checkpoint on Friday, July 20 at an undisclosed location within the Ventura city limits between 8 pm and 3 am. DUI checkpoints are a proven enforcement tool effective in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes. Research shows that crashes involving alcohol drop by an average of 20% when frequent well-publicized checkpoints are conducted. Motorists caught driving impaired can expect jail, license suspension and insurance increases, as well as fines, fees, DUI classes and other expenses that can exceed $10,000. Funding for this checkpoint is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, targeting those who still don't heed the message to designate a sober driver.

Pension Reform: is anybody home in Sacramento?
Ventura City Manager Rick Cole gives immediate insight into breaking news. In his latest post, he discusses pension reform.
"We all have a stake in sensible pension reform. It may not seem to be in the immediate self-interest of government workers to take less. But the fates of Vallejo, Stockton and San Bernardino dramatize the perils of waiting too long to put your fiscal house in order."
