Greetings!
FNCE 2009 is the topic for this issue of RDNews. Shilpa Sharma, RD comments: "It was great to be at the ADA FNCE meeting -- it was my first conference and I enjoyed it immensely!" We are proud of Shilpa who completed her dietetics internship with HMC through SJSU and recently passed the RD Exam before joining the HMC staff. |
FNCE 2009 Review |
by: Shilpa Sharma, RD
BEST SPEAKER/TOPIC: I enjoy listening to motivational and inspiring talks, especially if the speaker is good. I thought that Pamela Jett was a great speaker and her talk "Words Matter" was a lot of fun, and very inspirational. I whole-heartedly agree with her on the importance of using the right words for communicating in our personal and professional lives. And as I transition from being a student into the professional life, her power-packed talk is a reminder for me to be positive and productive under pressure -- Hard work, Passion and Personality, it's us!
BEST PRODUCT or EXHIBITOR: I liked the Vegetarian Resource Group and felt that they had a very informative exhibit. Vegetarianism has been gaining popularity in recent years (partly due to books such as The Omnivore's Dilemma) and people are interested in knowing more about Vegetarian and Vegan diets. The exhibit of the resource group had several useful brochures and interesting recipes for healthy vegetarian and vegan diets for all age groups, and was overall very informative for the general audience.
BEST ITEM IN THE ADA BOOKSTORE:Nutrition Care of the Older Adult: A handbook for dietetics professionals working throughout the continuum of care by Kathleen Niedert, MBA, RD, FADA and Becky Dorner, RD. Edition 2. Of course, I work in long-term care so this was naturally interesting to me, and I felt it was a comprehensive resource book for dietetics professionals working with the geriatric population.
BEST PART OF GOING TO FNCE/Denver: It was my first ADA meeting so it was a wonderful learning experience for me. Although it was a bit intimidating to see the scale of the conference, it feels great to be the part of the vibrant dietetics community. Also, I was presenting my Masters Project at the poster session, and was thrilled to see the audience interest in the work. It was very encouraging and I also received a number of useful comments -- several people even asked me to follow-up with them regarding my paper, so I'm glad I presented the poster at the meeting!
ANYTHING ELSE: I bumped into an RD who was attending the ADA/FNCE for the 50th time! Her enthusiasm was infectious and I'll strive to have a long run at ADA/FNCE too! |
RD Tip |
Check the ADA website (click on FNCE image) to learn about the FNCE meeting in Denver. All the session information, speaker information and handouts are posted there --- and they are FREE! Would you like to earn some FREE continuing education hours? The HMC office has purchased the complete audio CD of the conference. The only requirement is that three dietitians listen together and submit the form to ADA. Since HMC paid for the Audio, the CE hours will be completely free for ADA members! Please email HMC with the name/date/time of the session you want to listen to and we will arrange to loan you the audio. |
Dear Dietitians; |
Attending FNCE meetings is an exhilarating experience! The Pre-conference consultant workshop by DHCC practice group was cutting edge. The excellent speakers were back-to-back with the latest dietetic practice. The expo looks like four football fields loaded with everything imaginable in food and practice. And, luckily the weather in Denver was an unseasonably high 70's just between snow storms. During the next few months several of the issues of RD News will feature information from the conference. We look forward to sharing with you and providing the FREE continuing education hours noted above. Enjoy!
