Halloween is just a week away, and then the holiday season really begins. Seeking out every opportunity to promote socialization at meals is important when working with the elderly.  Many, or even most, residents have only fair to moderate appetites.  With decreases in smell, sight, chewing and self-feeding ability, good to excellent meal consumption is usually not achieved.  How many times have you observed or been told, "Oh, the residents eat so well at a holiday or outdoor meal."  Often the food is not different, so what is promoting increased meal intake?  Special meals are accompanied by enthusiasm, social interaction, reminiscing of past celebrations and colorful decorations.

In many cases, such as an outdoor Hawaiian Luau, the way a meal is served is even different as volunteers and activity personnel assist to make the meal more festive and fun.  All of this activity, variety, energy, and excitement stimulates and increases a resident's appetite resulting in good to excellent meal consumption.
RD Tip
Menus and Themes the HMC way:
Facilities can increase socialization and nutrition intake without increasing costs by following easy to prepare pre-planned Holiday
and Theme meals served at usual meal times. In 1976, HMC was innovative in offering colorful holiday meal posters for every month of the year.  In 1986 HMC again was the first to offer a great variety of Theme Meals, complete with detailed activities.  Today HMC draws from a theme library of fifty different menus celebrating ethnic favorites, seasonal meals, historic events and minor holidays.  What makes Theme Meals especially user friendly to our facilities are the corresponding planned activities.  Described in each activity is the equipment needed, suggested decorations, music and dress, plus the actual procedure to carry out the activity. Theme Meals include an activity to create a party or celebration atmosphere, and a complete meal served at the regular mealtime.  Facilities are not incurring added costs of food served in the afternoon during an activity. Residents are not overfed in the afternoon - sometimes resulting in poor consumption of the supper meal.
Dear Dietitians;
One of my greatest joys as the founder of HM Composite was writing menus and recipes for facilities. Taking this to the next level involved creating systems of menus and recipes for special occasions at the skilled nursing facility.  After all, their quality of life is also improved by celebrating the holidays with their family, facility friends and staff. I used all my creative resources and life experiences to create both holiday and theme menus for our clients. Sometimes I would call my own parents and chat with them for ideas. I specifically designed theme menus for the elders and staff in SNF's. After decades of leading HMC, I completed an activity director's course --- probably my secret calling! Over fifty theme menu packets and hundreds of holiday menus were written over the years. Now, when I browse these files, I remember facilities where I have consulted, residents I served, staff who implemented the menus and especially memories of my own precious parents.

 May the holidays ahead and your celebrations bring you joy.    Victoria Major
