from the deans
Our Christmas celebration continues this week as we gather for one service on New Year's Day at 11:00 in the morning.
On the liturgical calendar, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, recalling the ancient Jewish practice of naming a child on the day of his circumcision. What better way to worship on this day than by remembering the name of the one who calls us to life and new possibilities in this New Year.
We also want to especially thank all those who made our celebrations so wonderful this Christmas with decorations, music and financial gifts that helped make it all possible. It was a wonderful day beginning with our new 6:00 service through the solemn mass later in the evening, to the quiet mass with hymns on Christmas morning. We particularly thank the St. John's chapter of the Daughters of the King for three abundant receptions. The services were all well attended and a joyous beginning to the season. May you continue to have a happy and holy Christmas and may your New Year be filled with much joy.

from the food pantry
St. John's Cathedral Food Pantry began sharing with individuals and families in the heart of the city on December 19 2010. After that day St. John's Cathedral Food Pantry completed a successful first year. From our first day we never saw less than 35 individuals/families on the first and third Sunday of the month. On several occasions we saw as many as 80 individuals/families.
While the Food Net supplies were running low, St. John's Cathedral Food Pantry was able to continue to share bags of food, toiletries, can openers, and other small gifts of hope. Thank you so much for the turkeys for Thanksgiving and the hams for Christmas; the smiles on the faces of the people receiving these gifts was worth more than money.
On behalf of every individual/family that received a bag of food from St. John's Cathedral Food Pantry, the Outreach Committee extends sincere thanks.
Thank you for your prayers, your special Thanksgiving and Christmas gifts, your financial support, and your words of encouragement and thanks.
God bless everyone that made an effort to support this very worthwhile gift to the community that surrounds St. John's Cathedral. We look forward to your continued support throughout 2012 as we kick off the New Year on Sunday 1 January 2012 sharing bags of food to assist those in need!
