For friends of the DeForest Area School DistrictSeptember 2012

Greetings!

Greetings!

Welcome to the 2012-13 school year!  As you can see in this newsletter, we're off to an exciting start. The first week of school State Superintendent Tony Evers visited Eagle Point Elementary School to honor school counselor Linda Bergh as Wisconsin's Special Services Teacher of the Year!

This year will bring some changes from the state level (see "New district 'report card'" below).  We will keep you posted throughout the year as these new initiatives are implemented.

With the continued enthusiasm and support from our community, we look forward to providing "an excellent education by engaging, challenging, and inspiring all students to pursue their full potential." (DASD mission statement).

Sincerely,

Debbie Brewster

New district "report card" coming this fall

.The 2012-13 school year will bring some exciting
changes to student learning in the DeForest Area
School District. This year will also bring changes to
the way schools themselves are evaluated by the state.
This October, the Wisconsin Department of Public  Instruction (DPI) will issue a School Report Card for each
of our schools and for every public school in Wisconsin.

The School Report Card, using multiple measures of  student learning, will provide valuable guidance on how our school is performing and where it can improve. The School Report Cards are just one part of a new, statewide accountability system for schools. To develop the system, DPI worked closely with parents, educators, and members of the business community. The Governor, State Superintendent, legislative leaders, and the U.S.
Department of Education also helped shape the new accountability system. This system, and the report cards, will grow and develop in future years.

DASD Updates in Brief

thank you imageThank you to DASD families and community members for their generous donation of school supplies this fall. In addition to individuals, several community groups and businesses sponsored supply drives in August and September:
  • Vogel Bros. Construction
  • DMB Community Bank
  • Edge Fitness (Ken and Kerri Grall)
  • Windsor Daisy Troop 2634
Annual Lend a Hand program begins

hand Each year DMB Community Bank sponsors the Lend a Hand program for students in our district. This program helps students get the supplies they need to succeed in school. During the month of September school staff identify items needed by students. Then in October DMB Community Bank displays a "handprint" for each request in their Main Bank lobby at 321 N. Main Street in DeForest. Community members purchase the items and
drop them off at either of the bank branches. The items are then delivered to the school.

We appreciate DMB Community Bank's generosity and effort in
helping our students. Questions about the program may be directed to Rhonda Gilbertson at DMB Community Bank at 846-3711 or Debbie Brewster at the school district at 842-6581.

Parent Key Communicator Group

Last spring, district administrators started the Parent Key Communicator
Group, a network of parent leaders (one per school) who serve as a
consistent, strong link to parents in their school. The group has been meeting monthly since March 2012 with Director of Administrative Services Ann Higgins and School/Community Relations Coordinator Debbie Brewster.
