Greetings!
Happy Spring!
As a district we try to use several means of communication with parents, students, staff and the general public. The past two years we have moved to using more electronic tools to provide information and engage stakeholders, such as this DASD News e-newsletter, the Flyers from Non-Profit Organizations e-newsletter, our website, Facebook, and DASD News Blog.
In an effort to continually improve the use of electronic media to communicate and obtain feedback, we have recently added a new segment to our DASD News Blog -- "From the Superintendent & Board of Education." You will find this feature as a tab on the top of the news blog. The page is intended to provide information on district-level issues or topics, such as the current budget development process, in one easy-to-find location. The Blog also allows for readers to comment.
Please feel free to use any and all of our on-line communication tools -- become a "fan" of DASD, DAHS, or other schools. Follow us on Twitter for emergency notices and school closings. Or visit our Blog for up-to-date news about the district, and messages from Superintendent Jon Bales and our Board of Education.
We are still in need of a volunteer for Tuesday, April 12 to facilitate a Teach Children to Save activity with 3rd grade students at Eagle Point Elementary School as follows:
- Three classes: 1:10-1:40, 1:45-2:15, and 2:20-2:50 pm at Eagle Point Elementary School - you can do one, two or all three classes.
You will be given an activity kit with all necessary materials and instructions.
If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please contact Debbie Brewster at dbrewster@deforest.k12.wi.us or 842-6581.
Sincerely,
Debbie Brewster
School/Community Relations Coordinator

News from your school board
How will the proposed state budget bill affect the DeForest Area School District?
What approach will the school board take to address the anticipated loss of revenue to operate the District?
Since 1993, Wisconsin has established the amount of revenue available to DASD for each school year at the state level. Known as the revenue cap, the state essentially sets the limit of each school district's budget - how much they can spend. The local Board of Education can determine how and where the revenue is spent, but the state determines how much can be spent on the budget bottom line.
Under the previous law, the amount of revenue available to a district was increased each year on a per pupil basis. For example, by current law, for 2011-2012, the DeForest Area School District would have received an additional $285 per student over the previous year, establishing the new revenue cap. That would have resulted in approximately $900,000 in additional revenue.
Instead, the new budget law being proposed by Governor Walker actually reduces the amount of revenue for each student by $576 over 2010-2011 levels. This will result in a reduction in allowable revenue of approximately $1,641,800 when compared to 2010-2011 revenue. The bill further proposes to freeze that revenue cap in place for two years.
